Making grilled cheese in an air fryer is the best way to get a perfectly crispy exterior with gooey, melty cheese inside!

What is an Air Fryer?

An air fryer works similarly to a convection style oven. It circulates hot air around a metal basket, which creates a crispy outer layer. You can get browned, crispy crusts without having to truly “fry” anything. An air fryer can mimic the texture with just a tiny bit of oil. There are many different types of air fryers. I used to have this Chefman air fryer but now I use the Ninja Foodi Grill Air Fryer, which has a large fryer basket.

The Best Bread for an Air Fryer Grilled Cheese

You can use any bread you like, but I prefer to use sandwich bread or sourdough bread that is around 1-inch thick. You don’t want it to be too thick or too thin, so 1-inch is just right. This will allow you to get a crispy exterior, but the bread will still have a nice chew to it.

The Best Cheese for a Grilled Cheese

I like using cheddar, gouda or provolone for my grilled cheese sandwiches. You can also do a blend for even more flavor. For firmer cheeses, such as cheddar or gouda, I recommend buying a block of cheese and shredding it just before making your grilled cheese. Pre-shredded cheese typically contains anti-caking agents which can make it harder to get a melty, gooey texture.

How to Make a Grilled Cheese in an Air Fryer

Start by buttering one side of each piece of bread. If your bread is very soft, you may need to soften the butter slightly before spreading. To soften the butter, microwave a tablespoon of butter on 30% power for 30 seconds or until softened. Spread the butter generously over the bread.

Preheat the air fryer to 390 degrees. Place one slice of bread, butter side down, in the preheated air fryer basket.

Sprinkle with 1/2 cup of cheese, then top with a second slice of bread, butter side facing out.

Toast the sandwich in the air fryer for 4-5 minutes until golden brown. With an air fryer, there is no need to flip the sandwich, since the air fryer cooks on both sides at the same time.

Slice the sandwich in half and enjoy immediately! If you want to take things to the next level, try adding a little tomato jam into your sandwich!
