Why I Love This Recipe

I love making halloumi and these fries are quick and easy to make! You can make oven-baked halloumi fries, but I like the air fryer version because they cook even faster! No oil is needed to “fry” because the air fryer circulates heat all around the fries to make them crispy on the outside. These make a great side dish for nearly any main dish! If you enjoy these halloumi fries, be sure to try my green bean fries and these air fryer mozzarella sticks!

What is Halloumi

Halloumi cheese is one of my favorite ingredients! It’s such unique cheese with a strong, salty flavor. It has a very high melting point so rather than melting when it’s cooked, it gets deliciously crispy. The flavor is like a cross between mozzarella cheese and feta cheese, and the texture is firm and chewy. I think it’s a great vegetarian ingredient because it has an almost “meaty” quality.

Where to Buy Halloumi

Halloumi can usually be found in the specialty cheese section near the feta and fresh mozzarella cheese. It’s sold in a vacuum sealed package with a little bit of brine. It keeps for a long time so if you find halloumi, you may want to stock up! It can be a little bit expensive but this sheep’s milk cheese is worth the splurge. You may be able to find it for less at Trader Joe’s or Aldi, but they don’t always carry it.

How to Make Halloumi Fries

Slice the halloumi into 12 strips. Halloumi is often split in the center of the cheese, so I used that split as a natural place to divide the halloumi in half length-wise, then I cut the remaining blocks into strips.

Dip each halloumi slice into the flour until lightly coated. Whisk the egg in a shallow bowl, then dip each halloumi piece into the egg. Let the excess egg run off. Dip the halloumi slice into the panko crumbs until coated.

Once all of the halloumi is covered in flour, egg, and panko crumbs, place it in the air fryer in a single layer, being careful not to overlap or stack the pieces.

The Best Dipping Sauces

While these fries are delicious on their own, you can also serve them with a dipping sauce! Try it with this easy curry sauce, creamy cilantro sauce, or your favorite marinara sauce.

Seasoning Suggestions

Halloumi has a lot of flavor on its own but if you want to play with different flavor combinations, you can add your favorite herbs and spices to the panko crumbs. Try adding 1 teaspoon of za’atar seasoning for a unique, savory flavor. Or add 1/2 teaspoon of smoked paprika for a warm smoky flavor.
