Food Review Friday- Chia Bars, Suja Juice, & Kefir Fro-Yo

I’ve got quite a collection of things to review today, all of them being slightly strange-sounding…

I tried everything from chia bars to frozen kefir this week. Some were good, some not so good. But that’s what these reviews are all about, right? So off we go!

Health Warrior Chia Bars!

I snagged this in the checkout line at Whole Foods (hello, impulse purchase) but they sold me with the talk of chocolate and peanut butter… First a quick note about chia seeds: If you haven’t tried them before, give them a shot! Chia seeds are super good for you, and provide lots of healthy fats! They can also serve as an egg replacer in some vegan baked goods. Anyways.

chia bar

This bar was on sale for $.90, so not too expensive. Taste-wise, it was similar to a Larabar, but a little less sweet. The texture was similar to a Larabar as well, but it was packed with Chia seeds. More than I expected, actually. It was also on the small side, but for 100 calories, it seemed reasonable.

Suja Juice

Disclaimer: I received some free coupons from the Suja juice company, so I was able to try this for free. That’s an important thing to note, because these are $8.99 EACH. Yes. $9 bucks for a bottle of juice…

suja juice

Did it taste good? Yes. It actually tasted pretty awesome. Not too sweet, and it didn’t take any “getting used to” as Kombucha does for some. But it was $9. So unless you’re really investing in your juice… I’d just make something at home. They do have some other flavors, and I do have more coupons, so I’ll be trying others, but probably not buying these on a regular basis.

Kefir Frozen Yogurt

Saving the best for last! I first tried a sample of this stuff at SXSW (even the plain was delicious) so when I saw it in the store, I went for the mango flavor.

lifeway frozen kefir

Holy YUM This stuff is good. Only 90 calories per serving, which meant that even though Alex and I polished off the whole pint, it was only 180 calories each. I definitely see this becoming a summer staple. It’s a little pricey, at $5 a point, but this stuff is loaded with probiotics and other things that allow me to tell myself that this treat is good for me ;) Really though, this is a great alternative if you have an ice cream craving, and it won’t leave you feeling like you just ate a “diet” treat.

  1. Those chia bars sound amazing — how many different flavors do they have? I love that the one you picked was chocolate peanut butter. I’m having my Reese’s PB Cup Oatmeal again this morning — it’s just too good of a combination! :)

    • I saw an Acia berry, and a Coconut flavor! Both sounded good but you can’t be peanut butter and chocolate ;)

  2. Wow I don’t think I’d ever pay $9 for a bottle of juice (so glad you didn’t).

I love chia seeds in everything :)

  4. $9 is a bit much for me, but I will probably try the chia bars. I just tried Kind granola for the first time yesterday. Wow – yum! It was hard to put down the bag.

  6. Haven’t tried any new products lately but am loving your reviews. I hate that healthy foods are so expensive sometimes. I think that’s what turns a lot of people off. Luckily, most things can be made at home!

  10. I also saw those Chia Bars at the checkout line at Whole Foods, but was able to resist. :) If I can make fake Larabars, I guess I can make those, too? Maybe? And I’m sorry, no matter how good that juice may be, there is NO way I’ll spend $9.00 on it. That is my entire salad from the Whole Foods hot bar, or 10 lbs. of carrots, or who knows what else I could buy? I do love me some ginger. [But I could buy at least two GT's Gingerades with that money...] The frozen kefir IS SO GOOD. I loved it when I had it in Austin, but haven’t found it sold around here…Maybe it is a good thing?

  17. Wow–it was $9 for one juice?? That is definitely a little pricey. But only $.90 for the Chia bar? That sounds very reasonable! I’m guessing the ingredient list was pretty clean. If I see those, I’ll definitely give it a try.

  22. These all seem like really interesting products. I find Lara bars too be a bit to sweet, so it is actually refreshing to read that the chia bar is less sweet. I want to find some kefir froyo!

  23. YUM! I want to try all those products! I’ve been seeing those CHIA bars pop up everywhere these days and anything with chocolate and peanut butter sounds like a win in my book :)

  24. Hi Liz! I just wanted to say that I absolutely adore your blog! I’m new to all of this, so this is the first time checking out your page. It’s so refreshing.

Anyway, my new fun food product is Artisana cocoa coconut butter! I put that stuff on everything (just like all of my nut butters). ;)

Looking forward to all of your future posts! Xoxo

  25. I have tried the Coconut Chia Bar and really enjoyed it (can you believe it was my first time ever trying Chia seeds? Woah!) I agree that it wasn’t too overwhelmingly sweet – liked that part. As for the Kefir Ice Cream – I love that stuff too. I try to buy it whenever I see that it’s on sale at Kroger :)

  26. I am a huge fan of kefir and frozen kefir is no exception! Lifeway is one of my favorite companies, their products are just so darn good. I do wish the frozen kefir pints were cheaper though.

  27. That chia bar sounds wonderful. And I love frozen kefir!

  28. I’ve seen that juice lately and I’ve really wanted to try it. The price tag definitely scares me away from it. I’m definitely going to have to maybe splurge a bit, so I can enjoy some great treats though. I deserve it after all since this is my last week of undergrad. YAY. I love that I’m going to treat myself with juice haha

  29. That frozen kefir is the BOMB! I’ve never had the mango, but the regular and the pomegranate are amazing! But seriously…are you kidding me on that juice?! Heck, you buy 10 bottles of that stuff and you could have just bought a pretty decent juicer!! Holy crap! And I thought $5 at the Whole Foods juice bar was bad! Eeek!
