What is tempeh?
Tempeh is made from fermented soybeans. It’s usually found in the refrigerated part of the natural foods section, near the tofu. It doesn’t have a strong taste on its own, but it’s great at absorbing flavors. By marinating the tempeh, we can transform tempeh into a flavor-packed plant-based protein.
Is Tempeh Good for You?
Yes! Tempeh is a great source of plant-based protein. It’s low in fat and it’s also a good source of fiber. Although it’s similar to tofu, tempeh actually contains more protein, fiber, and vitamins. It’s also a very affordable ingredient! Perfect if you’re on a grocery budget.
Various Types of Tempeh
You may see a few different types of tempeh at the grocery store. Typical tempeh is made from soybeans and a healthy kind of mold. (Since tempeh is a fermented food, technically, it’s made with mold.) You can also find tempeh that might be mixed with grains. If you need your tempeh to be gluten gree, be sure to check the package ingredients.
