What is tempeh?
Tempeh is made from fermented soybeans. It’s usually found in the refrigerated part of the natural foods section, near the tofu. It doesn’t have a strong taste on its own, but it’s great at absorbing flavors. By marinating the tempeh, we can transform tempeh into a flavor-packed plant-based protein.
Is Tempeh Good for You?
Yes! Tempeh is a great source of plant-based protein. It’s low in fat and it’s also a good source of fiber. Although it’s similar to tofu, tempeh actually contains more protein, fiber, and vitamins. It’s also a very affordable ingredient! Perfect if you’re on a grocery budget.
Various Types of Tempeh
You may see a few different types of tempeh at the grocery store. Typical tempeh is made from soybeans and a healthy kind of mold. (Since tempeh is a fermented food, technically, it’s made with mold.) You can also find tempeh that might be mixed with grains. If you need your tempeh to be gluten gree, be sure to check the package ingredients.

I use bottled sauces quite a lot. No shame! It’s just SO much more convenient… and no fail! That recipe looks awesome with tempeh in there. Teriyaki is delicious.
As for Twitter, I use it sometimes. A handy tool it is since you happened to add me, which led me to your blog! Bingo!
We don’t have 4th of July here (Canada) but today’s Canada day so although I’m not doing any BBQing (I just realized that it’s the perfect day for it too, WHY did I not BBQ!) I’ll probably do a little celebrating tonight.
I totally agree!!! Bottled sauces aren’t so bad! 🙂
My team at work all sang Oh Canada (backed by a you tube video) because my co-workers is Canadian 🙂
I have never tried tempeh but your recipe makes it look so yummy!
YUM! this look delicious! I don’t have any fun plans for the 4th just sitting around and hopefully enjoying the sunshine if it’s around 🙂
Great way to use tempeh, love it. And there is nothing wrong with pre-made sauces–I love Trader Joe’s Teriyaki sauce. Big fan of stir-frying with store-bought hoisin sauce as well. So easy! And sometimes that’s juuust right. I’m not a Twitter-er, but sounds like a good source of ideas 😀
Mmm, teriyaki tempeh! I just made teriyaki tofu, only with homemade sauce, but I really want to try this, it looks so easy!
I’ve only tried making tempeh at home once after tasting it at a Whole Foods demo (loved it there!) but wasn’t a fan of however I prepared it at home… however this stir fry looks enticing and maybe I’ll have to give it another try! Have a wonderful holiday weekend – hoping these sunny skies continue for us! 🙂
I hope so too!! And you should totally try this, it was delicious, it seriously tasted like Chinese take out!
oh yum, I haven’t have teryaki in forever, but I love it and need to make something with it soon!
Seriously teryaki flavor is one of my favorties. Ive never tried tempeh, but this recipe sounds incredible!
If you like teryiaki, you’d love this!!!
Looks like you cooked up a great man-friendly meal! I do have twitter, and I just followed you 🙂
Yay! I’m following you back! 🙂
So glad you’ve posted this recipe, just managed to find some tempeh (difficult to get hold of in the UK!) and I was looking for some inspiration, thanks!
