I love making guacamole and most of the time, I make this easy 4 ingredient guacamole. But sometimes I find myself with ripe avocados, without any of the other ingredients I’d typically add to guacamole like fresh cilantro, red onion, lime juice, or jalapeños. So how do I create delicious guacamole with just a few pantry staples? By using this seasoning blend!

You may have seen the guacamole seasoning packets at the store but if you have a stocked spice cabinet at home, you definitely don’t need to buy the packaged version. It’s easy to make at home and you can customize it based on how spicy you like to make your dip.

Guacamole Seasoning

Guacamole Seasoning Ingredients

  • Cayenne pepper– If you like a little heat, you can dial up the cayenne pepper, or leave it out for a more mild flavor.
  • Garlic powder– This is a great way to add garlicky flavor without using raw garlic, which can have a sharp taste when eaten raw.
  • Onion powder– When I don’t have red onions, onion powder can replace some of that flavor.
  • Cumin– I love the warm earthy flavor this can add to fresh guacamole. It’s not particularly spicy but it has a slightly citrusy flavor.
  • Salt– Obviously salt enhances all the other flavors. I like using coarse kosher salt but you can use table salt if that’s what you have. Just adjust the amount to account for the smaller granules.

How to Make Guacamole Seasoning

Combine all the spices and salt in a small jar and mix until combined. This can be stored in the pantry for up to 3 months. This seasoning is also delicious on black beans!

How to Get Perfectly Ripe Avocados

  • I like to pick out avocados before they’re close to being ripe. Most of the time, if they’re already ripe in the store, they’ll likely be bruised.
  • To ripen avocados faster, keep them in a bowl or paper bag with bananas. The ethylene gas released from the bananas will help soften the avocados quickly.
  • Once the avocados are soft, put them in the fridge. This will keep them at their peak of ripeness for much longer.

Tips for Storing Guacamole

If you’re making guacamole in advance, the best way to keep it from browning is to transfer it to a small container and cover the top with plastic wrap. You want to press the plastic wrap down onto the top of the guacamole so that it’s flat, with the surface of the guacamole completely pressed against the plastic. This helps prevent air from reaching the guacamole so that the guacamole won’t turn brown. Keep it in the fridge until you’re ready to enjoy it.
