Ever since we had whipped feta at a restaurant in New Orleans, I’ve fallen in love with this creamy, tangy dip. I’ve made whipped feta with cream cheese, but I wanted to make a version with Greek yogurt. It has the signature tang that you’d expect and it makes this whipped feta easier to spread.

Of course, I couldn’t let tomato season pass me by without letting the tomatoes in on the action. This part is completely optional, but if you have tomatoes on hand, I highly recommend taking this whipped feta to the next level. No tomatoes? No problem, just add a pinch of red pepper flakes and a sprinkle of fresh basil! If you like this recipe, be sure to try my crazy feta, too!

Whipped Feta ingredients

Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Feta– I recommend using a block of feta cheese, not crumbled feta. Crumbled feta contains anti-caking agents which can create a grainy texture when blended.
  • Greek yogurt– I used plain non-fat Greek yogurt. You can use whole milk Greek yogurt if you prefer. Just make sure it’s unsweetened.
  • Olive oil– I recommend a high-quality olive oil like California Olive Ranch.
  • Red pepper flakes– A pinch of red pepper flakes add a nice spicy flavor. If you don’t like spicy flavors, feel free to skip the red pepper flakes.
  • Cherry tomatoes– If you’re adding the burst tomatoes, I like using a colorful variety of cherry tomatoes, but any type of small cherry or grape tomato will be fine.
  • Garlic– A little garlic adds flavor and makes the feta extra fragrant.

The Best Feta Cheese for Whipped Feta

  • Real Greek feta cheese is made from sheep’s milk and that’s what gives feta such a unique flavor. Be sure to check the label because a lot of feta in the United States is made from cow’s milk.
  • Look for a block of feta that is in a solid block and in a container of brine. This will give you a fresher flavor than the kind of cheese that is vacuum-sealed.
  • I do not recommend fat-free feta. You’ll be missing out on all the delicious flavor and it won’t have the same texture. For this recipe, you need the real deal!
