Strawberry Overnight Oats
These strawberry overnight oats are perfect for a make-ahead breakfast! They only take a few minutes to prepare and each jar is filled with 10g of protein.
I love oatmeal but when the weather is warm, I don’t find myself craving a hot bowl of oatmeal. But overnight oats can be served chilled so they’re a great way to cool down on a summer morning. I also love that these jars have 10g of protein each! The Greek yogurt adds lots of protein to keep me full and energized all morning long. I also love that this recipe doesn’t require any cooking!
What are overnight oats?
Overnight oats are made by soaking raw oats in milk. The milk softens the oats so you get creamy oats without cooking. There are lots of variations you can make with overnight oats. This version uses Greek yogurt to add protein and strawberries to add sweetness.
Ingredients & Substitutions
- Rolled oats– Rolled oats or old-fashioned oats work best in this recipe. Quick-cooking oats tend to break down too much when sitting overnight.
- Milk– I used almond milk, but you can use dairy, coconut, or any type of milk you prefer.
- Yogurt– I like to use plain Greek yogurt for extra protein but regular yogurt works great, too! If you’re using plain yogurt, you may want to add a sweetener. Dairy-free yogurt works great, too!
- Strawberries– You can use fresh or frozen strawberries. If you’re using frozen strawberries, I recommend thawing them slightly and chopping them into smaller pieces. If you have leftover strawberries, try these Strawberry Oat Muffins!
- Jam– I liked adding a little strawberry jam for sweetness, but you can substitute honey or other sweeteners if you don’t have jam.
Are overnight oats good for you?
Absolutely! These overnight oats are a great healthy breakfast because the oats are a whole grain, providing healthy carbohydrates, protein, and fiber. The Greek yogurt adds additional protein to help keep you satisfied. You can lower the sugar content using plain yogurt.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I make this recipe vegan? For the yogurt, use your favorite dairy-free yogurt. I like Kite Hill dairy-free yogurt, which is thick and creamy.
- Can I use other fruit? Absolutely! Try it with blueberries, cherries, or raspberries! It works great with fresh or frozen fruit.
- Can I make it sweeter? Feel free to add honey or maple syrup to adjust the sweetness, if needed. I found that the jam and strawberries added enough sweetness but it may depend on your yogurt.
- Do I have to use a jar? No, you can use any airtight container. As long as you can stir the oats and seal it up, any bowl or container will be fine.
- How can I make it thicker? If you want a thicker consistency, try adding 2 teaspoons of chia seeds. Stir them in with the rest of the ingredients. They’ll make the oats super thick!
- Can I add more toppings? Yes! I love adding a sprinkle of granola, but it’s also good with shredded coconut or additional fresh berries.
