If you’re not familiar with overnight oats, it’s a great make-ahead breakfast because the raw oats soak in milk overnight, rather than being cooked on the stovetop or in the microwave. They soften and turn thick and creamy, just like oatmeal, but they can be enjoyed warm or cold. I like enjoying them cold with a little yogurt and fresh fruit. These overnight oats are my favorite during peach season!

Ingredients & Substutions

  • Rolled oats– Rolled oats or old-fashioned oats work best in this recipe. Quick-cooking oats tend to break down too much when sitting overnight.
  • Milk– I used almond milk, but you can use dairy, coconut, or any type of milk you prefer.
  • Yogurt– I like to use vanilla Greek yogurt for extra protein but plain yogurt works great, too! If you’re using plain yogurt, you may want to add sweetener. Dairy-free yogurt works great, too!
  • Peaches– White or yellow peaches work perfectly in these oats. You could also substitute nectarines for a similar flavor. If you want to try this with apples, try my apple cinnamon overnight oats.
  • Granola– This is optional, but I like the added crunch and sweetness of granola. If you’re looking for a good granola recipe, try my Chia Almond Granola or my Grain-Free Granola recipe!

How to Make Overnight Oats

Divide the oats into two small jars, then top with ¼ cup of almond milk and add a pinch of salt.

Let sit for 2-3 hours or overnight. When ready to enjoy, stir in the Greek yogurt and top with peaches and granola.

Are overnight oats healthy?

Yes! These are a great healthy breakfast because the oats are a whole grain, providing healthy carbohydrates, protein, and fiber. The yogurt adds additional protein to help keep you satisfied. You can keep the sugar content low by using plain yogurt and adding your own sweetener if desired.

Can I make vegan overnight oats?

Yes! I used almond milk to soak the oats. For the yogurt, use your favorite dairy-free yogurt. I like Kite Hill dairy-free yogurt, which is thick and creamy. Be sure your granola is also vegan. If you need a vegan granola recipe, try this easy oil-free granola!

Do the oats have to sit overnight?

The oats do need to soak in the milk in order to soften, but they don’t actually have to sit overnight. They can be enjoyed after just 2-3 hours in the fridge.

How can I make my oats thicker?

If you want to make super thick oats, try adding 1 tablespoon of chia seeds to the oat mixture. Chia seeds bind to the milk and create a really thick texture, while also adding healthy fats and fiber. They’re a great way to create really thick oats while getting a boost of nutrition!
