This Vegan Pasta Puttanesca is a simple Italian pasta dish featuring olives, capers, garlic, and tomatoes for a pantry-friendly meal that comes together quickly!
Pasta Puttanesca is a traditional Italian recipe that uses tomatoes, olives, capers, and garlic to create a simple pasta dish. Many recipes use anchovies but I wanted to keep this recipe vegan and I found that the olives and capers added plenty of salty, umami flavor without needing anything else. This particular recipe is a riff on a recipe I made in a cooking class at Mise En Place.
Ingredients & Substitutions
Pasta– I used whole wheat spaghetti but any type of spaghetti or linguine works great in this recipe!
Olive oil- I recommend a high-quality olive oil as the flavor will shine through in the end result.
Garlic– I used full cloves of garlic pressed in a garlic press but minced garlic is fine.
Oregano– Dried oregano adds an herbal, earlthy flavor.
Red pepper flakes– This adds a spicy flavor to the dish. You can add more or less depending on your spice preference.
Olives– I used kalamata olives but any pitted black olive is fine.
Capers– Capers are immature flower buds that have a briny, salty flavor.
Tomatoes– I used chopped Roma tomatoes but you can use cherry tomatoes or even canned diced tomatoes, although fresh tomatoes have the most flavor.

That pasta is seriously making me drool right now, looks so fresh and not heavy and greasy like most! Those 20 miles today have me all over anything that remotely resembles a carb 😉
Thank you SO much for the comment on my blog!!! Your dinner sounds yummy! I LOVE Italian food. Its amazing!!! Its not Friday anymore, so now you can celebrate that amazing news 🙂
We had beautiful sunshine today and have had all week, it’s gorgeous… fecking freezing at night but ya can’t have it all!
I love the look of that pasta dish 🙂
this week dragged on while it happened, but now that it’s saturday i can’t believe a whole week has gone by! i love puttanesca pasta- it’s probably my favorite pasta dish out there! it’s so yummy. i’m not big on italian food, but i’ll go for it sometimes. the other night we had inventory at work and at the end (aka 11 pm) they gave us a freshly cooked feast of italian and it was pretty yummy! pot lucks are so fun, it must be so nice to have a weekly sit down meal with all your friends without the chaos of trying to eat out! what a great idea!
It’s so cool that you have a Thursday potluck – so fun! I don’t eat italian food much these days but I love it when I do. I think I sickened myself of pasta when I was a student!
That looks so delicious and fresh! And I love the idea of potlucks. I make “family dinner” for my roommates and a few friends from time to time–but I usually go tacos or fajitas. Mexican is so easy to make for a crowd, and the vegan versions taste just the same! Like taco seasoning or fajita seasoning 😀
That pasta looks delicious. I am so going to have to make it with gluten free pasta. Hopefully mine will turn out as good as yours does.

The sun is most definitely not shining here. It’s so cold- autumn is definitely here now. Your pasta dish looks great for a dinner party.
