Creamy Mocha Smoothie
This creamy mocha smoothie is a delicious way to start your day! It’s rich and creamy, made with coffee to perk you up!
I’ve been on a smoothie kick lately and this creamy mocha smoothie has an extra boost of caffeine thanks to the coffee! Of course, you can make this with decaf if you prefer. Either way, it’ll taste like you’re drinking a milkshake for breakfast! I love the combination of chocolate and coffee for a little mocha flavor. This recipe is easy to make and you can customize it based on how sweet and creamy you want it to be. While I love spoonable smoothie bowls, I recommend keeping this one as a sippable drink.
Can You Add Coffee to a Smoothie?
If you’re wondering about adding coffee to a smoothie, I’m here to confirm that it’s delicious! The trick is to make sure the coffee is chilled or room temperature. You certainly don’t want to add hot coffee to a smoothie. I recommend using a cold brew coffee or iced coffee. In a pinch, you can use cooled coffee, but keep in mind that coffee that has cooled is different than iced coffee or cold brew coffee. According to coffee expert Dan McLaughlin, “As hot coffee cools, these lactones break down to become carboxylic and chlorogenic acids. These acids present themselves via a bitter/acidic flavor in the cup. This combined with the oxidization that is also occurring as coffee cools down just makes for a super unpleasant taste most of the time.” You can learn more here.
Tips for the perfect smoothie
- To make your smoothie extra thick, freeze the banana before blending. If you don’t have a high-powered blender, slice the banana before freezing, so it’ll be easier to blend!
- If you have trouble blending your smoothie, add an extra splash of almond milk to get things moving. Add a little bit at a time until it begins to blend. Adding too much liquid will water down the smoothie. Still struggling with your blender? Read my tips for getting the best results from your blender!
- Be sure the coffee is completely cooled before blending. I used hot coffee and just let it come to room temperature but this recipe is also great with cold brew coffee!
Variations and Substitutions
- If you want to add more protein to this recipe, use a scoop of chocolate or vanilla protein powder in place of the cocoa powder.
- I liked adding a little almond butter to make it extra thick and creamy while also adding healthy fats. But if you want to lower the calories of this smoothie, you can skip the almond butter.
- I used almond milk but this recipe is also great with oat milk!
Are Smoothies Healthy?
They can be, but it really depends on what you’re adding to your smoothie. If they’re filled with fruit and nothing else, you might be hungry shortly after you drink your smoothie. That’s why I like adding a little almond butter for healthy fats and a bit of protein. I also like adding a little protein powder to make it more satisfying. But in general, as long as you’re not adding loads of sugar, most smoothies are a good way to start the day!
