Why I Love This Recipe

If you’ve been following me for a while, then you know how much I love pizza night. We even have an Ooni outdoor pizza oven right in our backyard! I never get tired of a crispy, chewy crust covered in rich sauce, melty cheese, and all my favorite toppings. Are you with me?

Now you can take your pizza night to the next level with this easy homemade pizza dough! This recipe for two crusts is about as simple as it gets. You only need four ingredients, and you can even freeze half the dough to save it for later. You could also make two pizzas so there’s plenty to share.

I love how easy it is to make this pizza dough from scratch. Just combine the ingredients, let the dough rise for two hours, then roll it out and bake with your toppings. That’s it! The result is a delicious homemade pizza you’ll want to make again and again.

Thick Crust or Thin Crust

One of the best parts about this dough recipe is that it’s so versatile. You can make any kind of pizza you like! Roll it out into a traditional pizza crust, stretch it into a flatbread style, or try something right in the middle. All options are delicious options!

I recommend rolling your dough until the crust is 2-3 inches from the side of the baking sheet. Then, once you try your pizza, you can decide if you want to make it thicker, roll it out thinner, or make it the same way next time!

Because this dough recipe yields enough for two crusts, you could even make two different styles at once and compare. Roll out your dough to varying thicknesses, bake both pizzas, then see which one you like better! If you ask me, pizza experiments are the best experiments.

Bread Flour vs. All-Purpose Flour

For the best results, I recommend using bread flour in your homemade pizza dough. It has a higher amount of gluten and protein, which makes a big difference in the structure. You end up with a soft, chewy crust that gets beautifully crispy on the edges!

Dough made with bread flour will also be a little more elastic. That means after you roll it out, it will snap back a little bit. A good rule of thumb is to roll the dough out about an inch farther than you want it.

If you don’t have bread flour, all-purpose flour will still give you a great crust! Just keep in mind that all-purpose flour contains less gluten, so it won’t rise quite as high. It will also be less “stretchy” as you’re rolling out the dough, so you want to be careful not to roll it out too much. It won’t snap back the same way bread flour dough does either.

How to Make Pizza Dough Without Yeast

Looking for a quick and easy crust recipe that’s ready in minutes? My 2-ingredient pizza crust recipe is the easiest crust ever! It’s made with Greek yogurt and self-rising flour, so you won’t need to use any yeast or rest the dough. If you’re in a rush, this recipe can be ready fast.

Or, you can make my beer pizza dough which uses beer instead of yeast. It gives you a thin, crispy crust with just a hint of hoppy flavor. Don’t worry, the alcohol cooks out in the oven so it’s safe for the whole family.

How to Freeze Pizza Dough

This recipe will make two pizza crusts. You can either make both at once or you can freeze half for later! Trust me, you’ll love having pizza dough ready and waiting for you in the freezer.

You’ll combine the dough ingredients, let it rise, then separate into two dough balls like usual. Place one of the dough balls in a plastic freezer-safe bag, then store for as long as you need it. I recommend using within six months.

When you know pizza night is coming up, move the dough to the refrigerator and let it thaw overnight. Before baking, take the dough out of the fridge and let it come up to room temperature for an hour. After that, just roll it out, add your toppings, and throw it in the oven!

My Favorite Pizza Toppings

When it comes to pizza toppings, the only limit is your imagination! If you’re looking for some inspiration, here are a few of my top picks:

  • Shredded or fresh mozzarella
  • Red sauce
  • Pesto
  • Artichoke hearts
  • Onion
  • Olives
  • Peppers
  • Mushrooms
  • Sun-dried tomatoes
  • Spinach
  • Ricotta
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Garlic
  • Fresh herbs
  • Hot honey

When you’re ready to make the pizza, preheat your oven to 500 degrees. Divide the dough into 2 balls. Roll the dough onto a floured surface and stretch until thin.

Drizzle a little olive oil onto a 9 x 13 baking sheet. Stretch the dough across the baking sheet. It will typically stretch 2-3 inches away from the edges, depending on your desired thickness.

Add your favorite toppings and bake for 15-18 minutes until golden brown. Depending on the toppings you add, you may need to bake the pizza crust longer.
