For the past few weeks, I’ve been getting my workouts done in the morning rather than waiting until after work and I’ve been enjoying it more than I expected. While I’ve been a morning person for a while, I typically used my morning to enjoy coffee and get more blog related things done. Now I’m waking up a bit earlier and starting the day with a sweat session. It means I don’t have to worry about life getting busy or other things popping up and getting in the way of my daily workout.
I’ve always been a breakfast person, but now I get to the breakfast table and I’m starving. I know my body needs a little extra protein in the morning after a hard workout so I’ve been adding protein into my workout recovery smoothies.
So here’s one of my favorite workout recovery shakes!

Hello chocolate.
Tips for making the perfect brownie batter shake
- If you want to make your shake extra thick, free the banana slices overnight. Slicing them before freezing can make it easier to get a smooth consistency, even if you don’t have a really powerful blender.
- Justin’s makes a delicious chocolate hazelnut butter that is made from actual hazelnuts. (Don’t use Nutella... the first ingredient in Nutella is sugar.)
- If you can’t find chocolate hazelnut butter, feel free to use almond butter or peanut butter!
- To make this extra chocolatey, you can even add a teaspoon of cocoa powder before blending.
Once you have your ingredients ready, just blend until smooth!
You’ll see little specs of the cacao nibs in there! I love the texture they add. If you don’t have any, don’t worry about it but they do add a nice little crunch!
Pour and serve immediately! The shake should be nice and thick!
I love thickening a smoothie with oats and avocado. That protein powder must stave off any post workout hunger very efficiently.
I love that you used almond milk! That means I can indulge! I agree, I love to workouts out of the way in the morning! Thanks for the inspiration!
This sounds yummy! I’m not big on smoothies (I know, I know!), but I do enjoy a quick proteins shake in my blender bottle. Right now we’re into MuscleTech NitroTech chocolate protein powder and I always add a tablespoon of PB2 to it, to help up the protein and flavor! I also use 1 cup of unsweetened cashew milk instead of water to give it more ‘oomf”.
Yum! I love adding PB2 into my shakes, too! It’s such a great flavor!
looks delicious. I love Whey Protein for getting the protein in when I don’t have time to eat 250g of protein from real food and get my body to absorb it!
This sounds delicious! I usually go the vanilla protein shake route. Mix it with nut butter and bananas or I’ll use mixed berries with vanilla protein. I definitely think I need to get on the chocolate protein train! It would be great to mix it up. Thank you for sharing!
I usually just stick with vanilla also, but this chocolate is really good!
I love avocado chocolate mousse, and I’m sure I’ll love this smoothie too.
Chocolate smoothies are my favorite! Saving this recipe for later!
This smooothie looks so good, Liz! I just know I’ll love this one. I mean it’s a brownie shake so what’s not to love?
I’ve always wanted to try EAS so maybe I should now. I enjoy smoothies in the summer but they never keep me that full. I think I’ll have to give this stuff a try though,
Smoothies are definitely my go-to! Such a great way to refuel after a workout. And I love the EAS brand!
Yeah, the protein powder has a great flavor and it wasn’t gritty or anything!
