Unique Salad Topping Ideas
I eat a lot of salads, but it’s not just because they’re “healthy”; I honestly really like them. It’s an easy way to get in a few servings of vegetables and as long as you switch up your toppings, the variety keeps it interesting. Carrots and tomatoes are great but I thought I’d share a few of my favorite outside-the-box toppings.
Apples

I love crunchy apples on top of a hearty kale salad. They’re a healthy way to add some sweetness and texture. I love tossing some in this apple walnut kale salad and it has a great texture. Try it with a little blue cheese, parmesan, or pecans.
Strawberries
I used to think strawberries were reserved for spinach and goat cheese salads but lately I’ve been enjoying them on kale or mixed greens. They’re delicious with salty pine nuts or almonds! They’re also delicious with a crumbly feta and a little balsamic. Blueberries and raspberries are a fun alternative, too.
Roasted Potatoes
Roasted potatoes can take a salad from side dish territory to the main event. There’s something so satisfying about the different temperatures. I love some warm roasted potatoes on a cold kale salad. Slice a few roasted red potatoes, toss them with olive oil, salt, and pepper, and roasted them until they’re crispy. While they’re in the oven you can prepare your salad and then toss it all together.
Halloumi
Halloumi cheese is a great way to turn a simple salad into the main event! Try this easy halloumi salad or just fry up some halloumi in the air fryer and add it to your favorite combination of veggies!
Fresh cilantro
I’ve been on a cilantro kick lately and I love chopping a bunch of it right into a salad! It adds such a nice flavor to fresh greens. Don’t rely on the dressing for spiciness, just add some fresh herbs right in! I’ll buy a big bunch and keep it in a jar of water in the fridge. It helps it stay fresh a little longer so I can grab a handful and sprinkle it right into my salad. Hello, flavor!
Roasted Chickpeas
Roasted chickpeas are a delicious salad topping because they’re similar to crunchy croutons but with more protein and fiber! Skip the buttery packaged croutons and try these roasted chickpeas instead.
Polenta Croutons
These tasty polenta croutons are naturally gluten free, but they’re so crispy and delicious! You can bake them in the oven for a unique salad topping that will add a delicious crunchy to your bed of greens!
Whole Wheat Croutons
If you want a more traditional crouton but you still want something healthy, try whole wheat croutons! Grab your favorite loaf of whole wheat bread and transform it into a tasty salad topping!
I find that I eat a lot of salads with roasted sweet potato. Actually, I just eat a lot of roasted sweet potato in general but they’re great on salads! LOVE that headshot!
Your new head shot is completely adorable! You are beautiful 🙂
And as much as I love taters, you’d think I would have thought to put them on a salad, but I haven’t! Totally giving that one a try soon 🙂
All amazing topping ideas!!! I love using apples, potatoes and hummus!!!
Yay Alexa! The new pic is great! 🙂
Yep, yep, yes, yes, yes! I love playing with salad toppings, any fruit or veggie is fair game, nuts and seeds (even nut butter), coconut bacon, chickpeas, sweet potatoes, cooked grains, the options are really endless!!
Thank you for linking up with us for Meatless Monday!
My favorite salad toppers = artichoke hearts, seared salmon or tuna, grilled eggplant & onions, cherry tomatoes & bell pepper. Oh and olives & anchovies! Cannot forget those.
Wait. Eggs too. LOL!
I’m a big fan of the salad. One of my fave toppings is spelt berries. Gives it a little added texture.
Ohhh I’ve never had spelt berries! I’ve had wheat berries though and I love those!
I truly love eating salads too! I agree that there are endless combinations to them. Thanks for linking up!
I recently tried potatoes and rice (two different salads) on my salad. I like adding the extra carbohydrates but still get my vegetables. Great ideas Liz!
YES to all of those. I also love jalapeño chips, but they are not all that healthy since they are fried. But I bet they could be made healthier or baked.
