Vegan Beer Bread
This 6-ingredient beer bread recipe is so easy to make and it tastes amazing! You can have fresh bread in no time.
Last week, I was craving some warm comfort food but I didn’t want to make anything complicated. I remembered this beer bread recipe that I made a few years ago and decided to throw it together again. It was even better than I remembered!
How to Make Beer Bread
In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
Add the beer and gently mix until combined.
It’s ok if there are still streaks of flour. You don’t want to overmix the dough.
Spray a 9×5 loaf pan with non-stick spray, then transfer the dough to the pan.
Top with vegan butter (or regular butter, if not vegan).
Bake at 375 degrees for 45-55 minutes until golden brown.
Tips for the perfect vegan beer bread
- I’ve made this bread with Stella Artois and PBR, but any light beer without a really strong flavor should work. I wouldn’t recommend using any sort of dark beer or anything with a strong taste, like a sour beer.
- I kept this recipe vegan by using Earth Balance, which is a “butter” made from coconut oil. If you’re not vegan, feel free to use regular butter.
- When combining the ingredients, be sure not to overmix the batter. Use a wooden spoon, not an electric mixer.
What to serve with beer bread
- Try it as a snack with a simple smear of butter
- Serve it with a big bowl of vegan chili
- Have a slice of this bread with my favorite lentil soup
No matter how you slice it, you’ll love this vegan beer bread!

Use a light beer without a strong flavor. I’ve used Stella Artois, PBR, and Bud Light.
I may or may not have eaten half a loaf yesterday. Oops. What can I say, there’s nothing better than bread fresh from the oven! I love how this bread has a crispy crust. You could add butter or jam on top but I just ate the slices plain! I think this bread has plenty of flavor on its own!

Have you tried making beer bread?
I substituted tahini for the vegan “butter,” out of saturated fat concerns. It was fine.
A bluffing recipe perfect for someone like me who is not found of spending time cooking. The plain version is super good on its on but it as a great basis for options. Green olives and grated vegan cheese with herbs for exemple. I personally found the 1/4 cup of sugar being too much. Thanks for this recipe!
My roommates and I had a lot of beer in our fridge that we didnt like so I thought I’d look up a vegan beer bread recipe. So glad I found this one. This recipe is AMAZING. It’s basically a staple in our house. We probably make it once a week and my roommate that doesnt even cook enjoys baking this bread. We keep cheap beer around specifically for this recipe.
Followed every aspect of the recipe and then added some minced fresh thyme to the dough. I add a few large pieces of thyme to the top of the loaf ans prinked the top of the loaf with fleur de sel before baking. For the beer I used Great White. This bread was sold delicious. Dense. Next time I will try it with gluten free flour. Either way, so delicious.
Yay! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I love the idea of adding fresh thyme! Yum!
I made this bread, and it was sooo good!! It’s a game changer!
I felt like it wasn’t going to turn out because it was so easy and simple, but it came out even better than expected. Making it again tonight! I drizzled a tiny coconut oil on top for crunch, because I do not have vegan butter, and also sprinkled a mix of seeds. It looked like a bakers loaf in the end, and texture !
Thank you so much!!
Hi! Could I use oil instead of vegan butter?
Turned out great. The butter makes it really crispy. Used 2tbs of sugar and 2tbs of maple syrup instead of just sugar (my hubs doesn’t much like the maple syrup we bought, so I’m trying to use it up.)
Ate it with soup for dinner, and grilled some the next day for brunch.
Yum- thanks for sharing!
Yay! I’m so glad you liked it!!
I was making chili for supper and thought “ gee this chili would go great with a vegan beer bread” so I searched and found you super easy recipe for vegan beer bread. I LOVE the crust on the top. It adds such a nice crunch when topped with my yummy vegan chili. I will keep this recipe for future use and maybe even experiment with vegan cheese or different herbs next time. Thanks for sharing this recipe! I have shared with several friends.
