I love making smoothies, and this banana berry smoothie is one of the recipes I find myself making over and over again. In fact, I made it all summer before I realized I hadn’t shared a recipe for it! The formula is so simple, it almost seems silly to share, but if you’re looking for some smoothie inspiration, I hope this helps!

Sometimes I make my smoothie a drinkable smoothie, and sometimes I enjoy it as a smoothie bowl. I love adding toppings, and this one makes a great spoonable smoothie!

Ingredients and Substitutions

  • Berriesโ€“ I used a frozen berry blend that contains raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries. You can use a blend of all three or just pick one. It’s totally up to you! Some blends contain strawberries and those tend to be a bit sweeter.
  • Bananaโ€“ For a thick smoothie, use a frozen banana. For a drinkable smoothie, you can just use a regular banana. If you donโ€™t like bananas, try using frozen mango or frozen pineapples instead.
  • Yogurtโ€“ I used Greek yogurt for extra protein, but any type of yogurt is fine. I recommend using plain yogurt since the berries and bananas have plenty of sweetness. Feel free to substitute plant-based yogurt.
  • Milkโ€“ I used unsweetened vanilla almond milk, but any dairy milk or coconut milk is fine.

Tips for Making a Great Smoothie

I make a lot of smoothies, so I’ve learned a few tricks for how to get the best results. Here are a few of my best smoothie tips:

  • If you want to add protein powder or greens, blend those up with the liquid before you add any other ingredients. This helps blend them completely so you don’t end up with a gritty texture.
  • For a super thick smoothie, use frozen fruit and add the minimum amount of liquid needed to blend the smoothie. I have a whole post on how to make a super thick smoothie so if you want to make a spoonable smoothie, read that!
  • Adding sweetener to this smoothie is optional. I found that the bananas and berries had enough sweetness for me. But if you like a sweeter taste you can add a little honey or maple syrup.
  • This recipe is also a great way to prevent food waste. If you have spotty bananas or berries that are about to go bad, put them in the freezer and save them for your next smoothie! Be sure to peel the bananas before freezing.
