Tahini Stir Fry Sauce

First of all, let me say how much I absolutely love the Fall weather. Could it be more perfect? Alex and I have been taking long walks in the evening before the sun goes down, and it’s the perfect way to squeeze in a little exercise while enjoying the fresh air. Also, walking after eating aids digestion! (Win-win!) Try it. In the mornings, I’ve been waking up before the sun, just to enjoy a cup of coffee and catch up on blog stuff. You can’t beat a quiet cup of coffee.

So, I know I say this all the time, but recently I’m focusing on getting more protein and less carbs in my diet. I absolutely love bread, chips, crackers, etc. but they don’t fill me up the way protein and fiber do. So I’ve started cooking more proteins at night, such as tempeh, tofu, beans, etc. The other night, I wanted to do a stir fry, but I wanted a sauce more substantial than soy sauce, so I whipped up something lightly based off of my peanut sauce recipe.

We used this on tempeh, carrots, bell pepper, and broccoli. It made for a filling and delicious stir fry!
Serves: 2
  • 2 tbsp tahini
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce (or liquid aminos)
  • 1 tsp maple syrup
  • pinch red pepper flakes
  • dash of black pepper
  1. I added in the carrots and pepper and let them cook for 2 minutes in a little bit of vegetable broth and coconut oil.
  2. Then I sliced the tempeh and added it in with the broccoli.
  3. I cooked for a few more minutes, adding a little more broth if the pan started to get dry.
  4. After all the veggies were cooked, I stirred in the tahini sauce. I wasn't sure what it would taste like, but it actually came out really well.
  5. It's a more mild-salty flavor (compared with super salty soy sauce) so I liked that a lot. The maple syrup gave it just a touch of sweetness, and the pepper flakes were a nice kick. I like things really spicy, so I used a lot of red pepper flakes.

This recipe makes about 1/4 cup sauce, which was plenty for the two of us!

You could certainly add in a little brown rice to this recipe, and it would be even more filling, but with just 2 oz of tempeh and a few handfuls of vegetables, I was full for the rest of the night. Protein and fiber have a way of doing that!

What’s your favorite stir fry sauce?

  1. I love tahini on top of my stir fries!! One of my favorite vegetarian restaurants makes the best stir fry topped with tahini 🙂

  2. I’ve never really made stir fry… but I do like to eat it! I typically like curry or coconut sauces, but not sure those count as stir fry 🙂

  3. Vishnu and I love going on post-dinner walks too! It’s a fun way to decompress from the day!

And this sauce sounds delicious. I have a tub of tahini that I need to use up. Will definitely be trying this soon!

  4. I add tahini to my stir fry sauce too! With some tamari and miso as well. I need to add tempeh to my stir fry next time. Looks delish!

    • I need to get some tamari!

      • Tamari is wheat-free and generally of better quality than most (but not all) soy sauce. I also make a tahini sauce with miso but don’t add tamari to it. I don’t cook it so that the miso has the most probiotic benefit. I like to add lemon juice and garlic to it sometimes. Anything with tahini is tops in my book. Recipe looks very yummy.

  5. Ooo yum! I’ve never tried tahini before, except in hummus, but this looks so good! I love ginger or peanut stir fry sauce too.

  6. I may try this sauce. Lately for stir frys I use a combo of Trader Joe’s sauces and have been loving their sweet chili sauce….I am also trying to get more protein in these days!

  7. I have never thought of adding tahini to stir fry’s before. I love making them because of how easy they are. My favorite sauces are usually peanut based or spicy thai.

  8. I love tahini, but have never stir-fried with it; bookmarked!

  9. Yumm!! This sounds delicious! We have a whole container of tahini in our pantry, and I’ve been trying to figure out new, creative things to do with it. I definitely might have to try this out, as stir-frys are usually my go-to weeknight, throw-it-together-last-second kind of meal!

  10. Walking is so underrated.

This looks FABULOUS! I was just looking at my massive quantity of tahini–I totally overbought the last time I was at a Whole Foods because I was scared I wouldn’t be able to buy it in Tuscaloosa–thinking I needed to do something with it. This is similar to the Whole Foods’ Tahini Dressing from the kale salad, which is my favorite dressing EVER…although this looks even easier. 🙂

Also, how much do you love tempeh? I need to go pull some out of the freezer to thaw…

  11. Your stir fry sauce sounds good to me! I usually just got for a bit of lower sodium soy sauce or TJ’s red curry sauce (obsessed with that stuff.)

  12. I always love to try new stir fry sauces. I really love ones that include almond butter. I’ve been wanting to make some hummus though, so maybe I will have to buy some tahini and make this sauce as well!

  13. This sounds amazing, especially since it is paired with tempeh!! I bet it would also be super fantastic with tofu!

  14. I’m so in love with this weather as well :). And I need a new sauce for my stir frys!

  15. Tahini in stir fry is a brilliant idea, delicious 😀

  16. I love stir fries! Thanks for a delicious topping! <3

  17. Mmmmm stiryfry 🙂

  18. I know I need to up my protein uptake, too! Thanks for the wonderful stir fry sauce…I have all those ingredients on hand, so it’s an excellent recipe to add to my repertoire.

  19. Was looking for a stir-fry sauce that used tahini and came across your recipe. So glad I did! I used it in a chicken stir fry and it was very tasty. I subbed one of the tbsp of soy with pineapple juice. My son loved it and he doesn’t usually like sauces. Definitely a keeper for us…now checking out your other recipes as I am incorporating more and more meatless meals. Thank you!

  20. Stellar work there everyone. I’ll keep on reading.

  21. This tahini stir-fry sauce is seriously delicious in addition to being super simple to make—perfect for 1 or 2! Thank you!!!
