What is tahini?
Tahini is a creamy paste made from sesame seeds. It adds a unique depth of flavor to these cookies. Its nutty richness pairs beautifully with the chocolate, creating a tasty twist on a classic chocolate chip cookie. Plus, tahini is naturally vegan and packed with healthy fats and nutrients! Ingredients & Substitutions
- Tahini– This adds a rich, nutty flavor to the cookies. Make sure to stir your tahini well before using to avoid a separation of oil and solids.
- Avocado oil– This provides moisture and a subtle buttery taste. You can substitute it with melted coconut oil if desired.
- Sugar– Granulated sugar sweetens the cookies and helps create a slightly crisp texture on the edges.
- Almond milk– This keeps the dough moist and ensures a vegan-friendly recipe. Oat or soy milk can be used as alternatives.
- Flour– All-purpose flour is the base of the cookie dough. Be sure to scoop and level the flour for accurate measurement.
- Baking soda– Essential for helping the cookies rise and develop a light, airy texture.
- Salt– Enhances all the flavors and balances the sweetness. I also added a pinch of flaky sea salt on top for flavor and texture.
- Dark chocolate chips- Use dairy-free chocolate chips or chunks to keep this recipe vegan. Roughly chop your chocolate for varied distribution throughout the cookies.
My Favorite Vegan Chocolate Chips
There are a lot of good dairy-free options on the market now! Enjoy Life makes great allergy-friendly chocolate chips, which are vegan. I also love theย Ghirardelliย non-dairy chocolate chips,ย which are extra large and come in a dark chocolate variety, which is so good. If you need a budget friendly option, Kroger’s store brand (Simple Truth) makes great non-dairy chips.
How to Make Tahini Cookies
Tips & Tricks
- Allow the baking sheet to cool completely between batches, or use more than one baking sheet. If you put cookie dough on a hot pan, it will brown the bottoms too quickly.
- If you like salty treats, add a little pinch of flaky sea salt when the cookies come out of the oven.
- Let the cookies cool slightly to ensure they donโt fall apart, then transfer to a wire rack to finish cooling.
How to Store Leftover Cookies
Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature. While the cookies will last 5-6 days, theyโre best enjoyed within the first 2 days. This recipe makes a pretty large batch of cookies, so if you donโt want to make them all at once you can freeze the cookie dough, as noted above.
