Christmas Sugar Cookies
Finally! It’s the season for Christmas cookies. I had some friends over last night to watch the Christmas classic, Home Alone, and it was a good excuse to kick off the baking season. To be truthful, I’m really not that much of a baker. I hate measuring things, and baking requires you to be a tad more specific… so admittedly my creations don’t always turn out well. Thankfully, I have a great sugar cookie recipe that leaves the cookies soft on the inside, and just a tad crispy on the outside. I made this sugar cookie recipe again, topped with butter cream frosting and sprinkles.
Mmm you really can’t go wrong with sugar cookies. I made a few slight tweaks to the original recipe that I posed a couple of years ago, so here’s an updated version.
Simple Sugar Cookies
- 1 cup butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp salt
- Additional sugar (for rolling)
In a mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar. Add egg and vanilla. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and baking soda, and gradually add it to the creamed mixture. Shape into 1 inch balls, and roll in sugar. Bake on a greased baking sheet and flatten, slightly. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes.
I saved a few Christmas cookies for last night, when Alex and I celebrated Christmas. We’re going to be apart for the real Christmas day, and we have something going on every single night until we each head home to our families, so we had to celebrate a little early. I was so excited to give him his gifts, that I could hardly wait, so maybe it’s good we opened them early! I can’t post any pictures of the gifts just yet, as it might ruin a few surprises for other people, but it was a special night 🙂
The idea of doing something together every night before heading to your families is great! I hope it makes not spending Christmas together a little less hard. And your cookies look so simple and festive.
Cookie baking and listening to Christmas tunes while at it is one of my favourite activities in December, In fact, I have some dough chilling in the fridge as we speak. Time to get baking!
BEAUTIFUL Christmas tree! I love the cookies too. In the years past, I’ve baked A LOT around the holidays. However, this year I haven’t done quite as much just because we’ve been SO busy and having a little baby around makes the task of baking a little more daunting. 😉
Those look like absolute perfection and that is all I have to say.
Love the simple sugar cookie recipe!! Who needs fancy 25 ingredient cookies when you can have a simple yet AMAZING basic one? Especially those those non-bakers like me who can only handle so many ingredients at a time. The fewer the ingredients, the less likely it is that I’m going to screw it up!
i did eat copious amount of chocolate last night while making chocolate covered pretzel rods. I am not much of a baker either but love baked goods 😛
As an official taste-tester, I can verify that these are delicious—a little too delicious. I ate three.
Aww looking forward to seeing some photos! Love the tree and these cookies are a must! I shall make them this weekend >:) Yummy!!! Have a great weekend Liz! -Iva
LOVE cookie baking. Made sugar cookies with my nephew last weekend and ate an excessive amount of cookies, icing and sprinkles…especially the sprinkles!
I love baking cookies. And it’s funny – sugar cookies are never my first choice but whenever I make them, I love them and then wonder why I don’t make them more often. They are my son’s favorite.
This looks amazingly good. sometimes it’s so hard to control yourself when something is so tasty like now!
