Breakfast 101
I love breakfast.
I think it’s the only thing that gets me out of bed. (Assuming coffee falls into the breakfast category.)
I’ve never understood people who don’t eat breakfast. How do you find motivation to throw off the covers in the morning? And how in the world do you make it all the way to lunch? These are just things I’ll never understand. Like people who don’t like peanut butter.
Back in college (you know, way back when…) I used to eat the exact same thing for breakfast every single morning. One Three bowls of Special K with Red Berries Cereal. Every day. I still think it’s delicious. The issue was, I was literally eating 3 servings, and I was still starving by lunch. As it turns out, a breakfast made up entirely of carbs doesn’t really keep you full.
Now I’ve gone through a few different breakfast phases. I’ve made more of an effort to start the day off with a little protein and fiber, to keep me satisfied unti lunch. So here’s a round up of my favorites:
This is my default breakfast. I have variations of this 90% of the time. I love it with cacao coconut butter, but since that’s a little pricy and I don’t always have it on hand, I sometimes just have it with a scoop of peanut butter on the side.
No no. Not just a little container of some aspertame-laiden lame-o yogurt. Go for the good Greek stuff. Chobani is the obvious favorite. I a bowl of plain 0%, a little stevia, tons of blueberries, and a little granola for crunch = perfection. If you’re really trying to get extra protein, try adding a scoop of vanilla protein powder instead of stevia. It’s delicious and it packs in a crazy amount of protein!
Craving some bread-like carbs in the morning? These banana bread protein pancakes are delicious but still loaded with protein so you’ll stay satisfied through lunch time. Finally, a protein pancake that doesn’t taste like rubber!
Ok I don’t eat these for breakfast often, but for a weekend treat (or when people are over!) these are adorably delicious and only about 40 calories each!
With the exception of the donuts, all of these meals are things I often eat for dinner. What can I say? I love breakfast for dinner. Especially cornbread waffles. Although I can’t vouch for the nutritional value of those.
Thank you so much for this. I was actually thinking that my morning (plain) bagel isn’t doing it for me anymore. I used to make smoothies but have slacked off. I love all the different options you’ve suggested. I definitely need more protein, less carbs, in my veg meals.

Amen!!! Breakfast is my favorite and I could never ever skip it.
I LOVE my breakfast too, and cannot get my head around those that don’t! My breakfast trend at the moment is a bowl of hot porridge made with nut milk with pumpkin purée or banana stirred through, with LOADS of cinnamon, and plenty of healthy fats in the form of almond butter, coconut oil or flaxseed. Yum!
Oh heeeeey sugar donuts… yum!
I’ve been on an egg white kick. It’s almost completely replaced oatmeal every morning. Crazy talk.
I’m on a pretty tight budget and am still getting used to what’s available in Edinburgh so my usual breakfast is porridge made with Scottish oats, skim milk and either banana, sultanas or an apple with cinnamon. Or toast with peanut butter. Nom
Oats are definitely a super cost effective breakfast!!
My husband doesn’t eat breakfast and I am always bewildered br that. Why would you skip a meal?? And yes, coffee is a MUST! I eat oatmeal nearly every morning and truly love it!
I feel like guys skip breakfast more in general. And I have NO idea how they do it!
Amen, sister. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day too. Even if I go out to eat, I like to order from the brunch menu.
My current (winter) breakfasts in rotation are:
steel cut oats, cinnamon, coconut oil, hemp & chia seeds, almond milk
over easy eggs + toast
eggrito
I never understand people who don’t eat breakfast either! It just doesn’t make sense to me. How can you not make 5 minutes in the morning before heading out the door? Won’t you starve or have to pay big $$ on the road or at the cafeteria? Won’t you feel like crap?!
I usually eat toast w/pb, oatmeal, or sometimes cheerios & almond milk. And tea. Always tea. Chai or english breakfast if I’m at work since it’s free there.
Haha I just think I’d be super cranky if I didn’t have breakfast!!
i just discovered the wonder that is the green smoothie. why not put the pb in the smoothie? that is what i do. i’ve been making mine with mlik, pb, banana, spinach, vanilla protein powder, and cocoa powder. yum!
Haha I have no idea why I don’t just put the pb in there, but I usually eat my smoothie with a spoon, and have some PB2 on the side!
I’ve had oatmeal for breakfast every day for at least a year now – I *love* it! It also helps to get me out of bed in the morning!
