I remember when a version of this bread dip went viral on the internet and it kind of made me laugh. It’s a really simple combination of flavors, but surprisingly delicious! If you’ve ever tried a little bowl of herby olive oil at your favorite Italian restaurant, you’ll be glad to know it’s easy to make at home!

Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Olive oil: Use a good-quality extra-virgin olive oil since itโ€™s the main flavor. Peppery, fruity oils work beautifully here.
  • Balsamic vinegar: Adds a subtle tang and depth. You can skip it for a more classic oil-only dip or use red wine vinegar instead.
  • Dried oregano, basil & thyme: These classic Italian herbs bring that familiar, savory flavor.
  • Crushed red pepper flakes: Adds gentle heat. Increase if you like it spicy.
  • Garlic powder: Gives garlicky flavor without raw garlic bite. You can use freshly grated garlic, but the flavor will be stronger.
  • Salt: Flaky salt is my personal favorite (I use Maldon flakes), but table salt works too.

Tips for the Best Bread Dip

  • Warm the bread first! Slightly toasted or warmed bread makes a huge difference.
  • Use a wide bowl to serve this dip. It makes it easier to swirl in a piece of baguette.
  • You can this in advance; just stir again before serving.
  • Try adding a little grated Parmesan cheese for even more flavor.
