What I Ate [for $2] Wednesday
By now, if you’ve been reading my blog, you’ve heard about the $2 challenge, where I’m eating on $2 per day for $5 days, in order to know what it feels like to not get to eat what and when you want. Then at the end of the week, I’ll donate the money I would have spent on food and groceries, to an organization that helps world hunger.
And since it’s What I Ate Wednesday, let me show you what you can eat on $2…
Breakfast:
- banana – $.15
- 1/2 cup almond milk $.20
- Peanut butter $.25 (can’t resist the pb)
Total: $.60 cents
Lunch
- Rice $.20
- Beans $.30
I also added red pepper, salt, garlic, and pepper. Is that cheating?
Total: $.50
Snack
- 2 Bananas $.15 (on in the morning, one in the evening)
Total: $.30
Dinner… well… this looked exactly like lunch…(See picture above)
- Rice $.20
- Beans $.30
Total $.50
Grand total for the day: $1.90
What do I miss the most? Greens! I’m pretty sure my body is craving some leafy-goodness. I’m sure everyone else is dying for some meat or dairy… but I’m craving my vegetables ๐
As far as the rumbling in my tummy… that’s kind of the point. And it really does put things into perspective. It’s amazing that for so many of us, the problem is eating too much. It’s interesting to get a sense of what it’s like on the other side of the fence, even if it’s only for a few days.
I loved this quote from Ryan Evans on The Stubborn Servant’s blog:
Maybe meโand youโare called to be a part of this world and not apart from it; to ease the pain of one. To shed light in the darker places; To love one into the presence of a healing and compassionate God; to bring the redeeming news of salvation to one who has not yet heard; to hold one child in need of love; to bring friendship, love, and joy to one; to pray with and encourage one; to meet the physical needs of one
My little $2 a day challenge seems so small when you put it in perspective. But small changes can have a big impact.
What are you eating this Wednesday?
<3 Liz
That’s insane how little you spent on food in one day! And honestly, greens don’t have to be pricey, I bet you could stay well under $5 with some leafy veggies. It is truly unbelievable, though, how much we really eat. How we always stuff ourselves silly, how much money we spend on over-eating that causes obesity.
Love the quote from Stubborn Servant’s blog. So beautiful knowing that we all have a purpose on this earth, even if it’s just sharing a little bit of love.
Have an incredible weekend!
Liz, I am really amazed at you for doing this. This is truly wonderful! You are such an inspiration!
I really commend you for doing this! It really is amazing that most Americans (myself included!) worry about eating too much when so many people are starving ๐
I applaud your dedication…what a great point it makes about how hard it is to eat let alone eat healthfully on so little:(
I’m so glad that you happened up on my blog! I love..love…love yours, and I so love what you are doing with the $2 a day. That is awesome! I so love that quote too. Great blog! :o)
Good for you for spending less than $2 on a day of food!! That’s fabulous! Miriam@Meatless Meals For Meat Eaters
What an interesting challenge!! I guess what Dave Ramsey says ‘beans & rice, rice & beans’ is true ๐
Your $2 challenge seems so hard! But also so sweet. I’m proud of you ๐ And as for the meals, I think that would actually be perfect for me because I tend to eat smaller portions out of one big dish and save it throughout the day for other meals, hehe.
Very creative version of WIAW! Looks pretty tasty too!
WOW. bananas, beans and rice. So simple and so cheap. All are usually yummy, yet I’m sure the meals feel kind of naked without any fun veggies or pizazz. lol
Keep up the good work and can’t wait to hear more!
