Learning How to Eat Sugar Free
This weekend was the start of a little “sugar detox” that Alex and I decided to do after watching Fed Up. (You can read all about the documentary Fed Up here.) So I thought I’d show you what we ate on Sunday, while we figured out the confusing world of sugar free food! The day wasn’t totally perfect, but we’re making progress!
Breakfast was whole grain toast with peanut butter. I bought Crazy Richard’s peanut butter which doesn’t have extra stuff in it. Just peanuts! The bread technically had a tiny bit of honey in it, (less than 1g of sugar per serving) so that was as close as we could find to sugar free bread! Plus, the bread is made locally and it’s hearty and delicious. We also had some fresh blueberries, which were a nice bit of sweetness.
For lunch, we had mashed chickpea sandwiches. It was chickpeas smashed with tzatziki and lemon juice, made into a quick sandwich with cucumbers! We ate quickly because we wanted to stain the deck before church.
Speaking of the deck, here’s how it turned out! It was a lot of work but we’re pretty happy with the result!
We quickly got cleaned up and headed to church. After church, we went over to my brother’s house and had dinner with them. We ordered Carytown Burger’s and Fries, which wasn’t exactly healthy, so I had half a black bean burger with some salad. Ok, and maybe a few french fries 😉
Truthfully, that’s an old picture of Carytown Burgers & Fries, because I was too preoccupied with my adorable nephews to take a photo of the actual burger I ate. The big difference? Not putting ketchup on my burger! I’m a ketchup fanatic so I’m learning to give that up! My salad was nothing fancy, but I had to get some greens in. It also kept me from eating all the french fries.
Overall, I think our day was a little carb heavy, but we’re still figuring out this whole sugar free thing! I ordered the I Quit Sugar cookbook so I’m looking forward to learning more about a sugar free diet and trying out some of those recipes!
Although I don’t consume too much sugar on a daily basis, I’m just not so sure I could do it. Well maybe I could.. I don’t know. In the meantime I’ll just let you handle it. I mean it looks like your doing an awesome job already 🙂 haha!
p..s beautiful deck!
I have definitely found that when I cut out sugar for a few weeks – I crave it less. I typically eat dessert once a week and am content; however, I do allow myself to go ‘overboard’ on holidays (probably making up for the rest of the no dessert throughout the year!) 😀
While I know eating less sugar wouldn’t be a bad idea and have toyed with trying it [multiple times …] before I can’t imagine life without chocolate. Still, I’m curious to see how it goes for you.
And carb-heavy? No way – don’t feel bad. If I posted what I actually eat in a day people would likely think I’m eating a crazy lot of carbs but I just like what I like and that happen to be fruit, legumes, grains, …
Also, I really like your reason to forget snapping a picture of your burger :).
I always enjoy reading your diet and nutrition. I’ve done sugar free diets before and honestly I do feel a little better afterwards. Sticking to the diet and staying on point is the hardest part though!
Home improvements are never easy, but so worth it in the end- your deck looks fab! I tried giving up sugar when I did the Whole30 and I couldnt believe how much sugar was in everything! It was a good learning experience for sure.
I couldn’t give up sugar but I guess I don’t really eat process foods/added sugars on a daily basis all that often. I am more of a sugar from fruits and vegetables kind of person with my favorite desserts thrown in when the craving hits 🙂 I love mashing chick peas with avocado, such a great lunch option!
I’m so ready to start eating less sugar but gosh it’s proven to be hard! Sugar seems to find itself into anything now a days. I find the hardest thing for me is at night I crave refined carbs and sugar and end up eating protein bars which are low in sugar but also contain artificial sweeteners. I have defiantly moved towards more of a sugar free diet but still need to make some changes!
I’ve learned a lot about sugar through entering stuff into my fitness pal! It’s super eye-opening to go through your log at the end of the day and see the sugar content of different items.
I’m totally on the no sugar train! I’m loving these posts. Andrew loves sauces so we have been making our own mayo, caesar dressing, ketchup and BBQ sauce. You can typically substitute date paste (or dates in your food processor) for sugar to add a little bit of sweet. The ketchup and BBQ sauces (thus far) do not taste like the typical ones, but I love knowing that they are homemade and we can control all of the ingredients. You may want to look up Whole 30 recipes for sauces and things since all Whole 30 is no sugar. Good luck and keep at it!
That doesn’t look to hard…until I realize that I would have put some jelly on that toast with the peanut butter, poured half a bottle of ketchup on the burger and had some dark chocolate to end the day. Whoops : /
