Simple Homemade Crackers
As I mentioned in my last post, I’m trying to keep my grocery budget in check. I don’t have a firm number in mind of what this budget should be (trust me, it will still be way higher than it should be…) but it’s helping me be more aware of what I’m buying!
With this goal, comes some fun challenges! I’ve already decided to stop buying nut butter (I’ll miss you, Justin!) but what else can I make myself? Why not crackers? It doesn’t seem too hard! I found a few different recipes online, but in the end, I kind of just did my own thing.
PrintSimple Homemade Crackers
- Prep Time: 15 mins
- Cook Time: 10 mins
- Total Time: 25 minutes
- Yield: 4 1x
Ingredients
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1/4 cup chickpea flour (or just more whole wheat flour)
- 1 tsp sugar (optional)
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp chili powder (optional)
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1/4 cup water
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350
- Whisk together all of the dry ingredients and then cut in the butter. I just used a fork and mashed it in until it got crumbly.
- Add the water and vanilla. The dough should be firm and not too sticky.
- Then roll it out as flat as possible. The thinner the dough, the crispier the crackers.
- Sprinkle with a little sea salt before baking, if you like.
- Bake at 350 for about 8-10 minutes. (The time will depend on the thickness of your crackers.)
- The remove from oven and slice with a pizza cutter or sharp knife
I cut mine into little squares, but they don’t have to be perfect.
And then, you’ve got some delicious, healthy, (vegan, if you use vegan butter) cracker! Oh, and this probably cost ~$.75 to make this recipe. Cheaper than a box of crackers! I also like this, because I can make them in small batches. (If I buy a box of wheat thins, it disappears entirely too quickly… portion control, my friends.)
Have you tried making your own crackers? Tomorrow I’m going to attempt making my own almond milk! Do you make your own almond/soy/rice milk?
I didn’t even know you could make your own almond/soy/rice milk! I am so ready to hear how this goes for you!
I think I need to get me some chickpea flour!! I tried to bake crackers once and almost burnt the house down lol Ive been a bit nervous to try more since then!
Hahaha awww, I hope the next try goes a little better! Also, the chickpea flour is optional. I’m sure you could make it with all whole wheat flour and it would still be good! I just like the extra protein/fiber kick!
Those look too freaking easy. I have to try them, which means I need more vodka. Perfect!
Hahaha I’m sure you could use a wine bottle too 😉 if that’s your thing!
These look really great. If you think about it, anything boxed or packed is so much more expensive than homemade. Although, I guess part if it’s for the convenience. Like almond milk? It seem so time-consuming to me. But I guess I’ll find out tomorrow. 🙂
THANK YOU for sharing this recipe–it looks fantastic, and I’m actually going to book-mark it so I can eventually try it myself. I commend you for going to all homemade nut butter–I got through it so quickly I’m not sure I could ever give up buying it 🙂
Looking forward to seeing the results of the almond milk!
I’ve never tried to make crackers- it’s always seemed like one of those things I could never make myself!
I thought it would be kind of hard too, but honestly, this was one of the easiest recipes ever!!! And if you don’t have chickpea flour, you can use all whole wheat flour!
Oh, such a great recipe, girl! These look sooo good!
I’ve never made crackers, those look so yummy 🙂
I made my own crackers the other day for the first time!! It was fun and they were super delicious!
Those look good! I’ve never made my own crackers or nut butter (yet!) but I have made my own hemp milk. It was surprisingly easy AND good.
