As I mentioned in my last post, I’m trying to keep my grocery budget in check. I don’t have a firm number in mind of what this budget should be (trust me, it will still be way higher than it should be…) but it’s helping me be more aware of what I’m buying!

homemade crackers

With this goal, comes some fun challenges! I’ve already decided to stop buying nut butter (I’ll miss you, Justin!) but what else can I make myself? Why not crackers? It doesn’t seem too hard! I found a few different recipes online, but in the end, I kind of just did my own thing.

Simple Homemade Crackers

5 Stars 4 Stars 3 Stars 2 Stars 1 Star No reviews
  • Prep Time: 15 mins
  • Cook Time: 10 mins
  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 4 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/4 cup chickpea flour (or just more whole wheat flour)
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp chili powder (optional)
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350
  2. Whisk together all of the dry ingredients and then cut in the butter. I just used a fork and mashed it in until it got crumbly.
  3. Add the water and vanilla. The dough should be firm and not too sticky.
  4. Then roll it out as flat as possible. The thinner the dough, the crispier the crackers.
  5. Sprinkle with a little sea salt before baking, if you like.
  6. Bake at 350 for about 8-10 minutes. (The time will depend on the thickness of your crackers.)
  7. The remove from oven and slice with a pizza cutter or sharp knife

I cut mine into little squares, but they don’t have to be perfect.

And then, you’ve got some delicious, healthy, (vegan, if you use vegan butter) cracker! Oh, and this probably cost ~$.75 to make this recipe. Cheaper than a box of crackers! I also like this, because I can make them in small batches. (If I buy a box of wheat thins, it disappears entirely too quickly… portion control, my friends.)

Homemade crackers are easier than you think! Skip the boxed crackers and make your own healthy, whole wheat crackers!

Have you tried making your own crackers? Tomorrow I’m going to attempt making my own almond milk! Do you make your own almond/soy/rice milk?
