Weekend Celebrations & Adventures
This weekend started off pretty amazing, since it was Valentine’s Day, and Alex surprised me by setting up a sushi station in the kitchen!
We tried our hands at whipping up vegetarian sushi and it actually turned out pretty well, considering we had never done it before. I’m not great at following instructions and the detailed list for the rice alone was a little overwhelming but we managed to make it. The rice turned out perfectly sticky and the ingredients weren’t that hard to roll. We put in avocado, carrots, cucumber, and (in Alex’s roll) cream cheese. You can’t go wrong with avocado.
After dinner, we headed to the National to see Three Sheets to the Wind, a local yacht rock cover band. It was so much fun, singing and dancing along.
Saturday morning, we headed to brunch and met up with our friend Christina. We decided to try out Viceroy since we’d only been there for drinks, and hadn’t had a chance to try out the food menu. They didn’t have a whole lot of vegetarian brunch options, but they did have a pretty exotic menu. (By exotic I mean they were serving things like truffled crispy pork belly with local pea shoots, blackberries, pine nuts, formage blanc. That is taken from the menu, verbatim.)
This vegetarian egg scramble was pretty good. I really liked the mozzarella and tomatoes but there were a whole lot of artichokes underneath there. This was consumed with many cups of coffee. I think I lost count.
We spent the rest of the day hanging out with one of Alex’s roommates from college and his wonderful girlfriend, who came to visit us! We had so much fun showing them around Richmond, stopping by the VMFA, Proper Pie, Xtra’s, and Can Can.
It’s fun how taking someone around your city can simply remind you how lucky you are to live in a great place.
Love the sushi station idea! I’ll have to give that a try. Also, that pie!! 😛
I love making my own sushi at home now! The rice takes a few extra steps, but I’ve tried it without all the steps, and it doesn’t turn out quite right. I’ve tried it with a bunch of different fillings, like tempura sweet potato, or crab, cream cheese, and sriracha. So yum!
a surprise sushi-making station? such a perfect date– the guy obviously knows you perfectly:) i keep telling my friends we need to try and make sushi – but everyone seems daunted by the task! what did you think? easy? difficult?
Looks like so much fun! I love taking people around Williamsburg when they visit because I take so much of it for granted living here. It’s fun to be a tourist in your own town!
You guys are so stinkin’ cute!! Love it!
Our weekend was spent in Atlanta for a friend’s engagement party. We were only there for less than 48 hours, but it was so fun to see our family and friends!
I don’t know why, but I’ve never try sushi! I know 😀 I’m late to the sushi party. Someday I will, I know it! Sometime we don’t appreciate what we have, until someone cames around and we tour them 😉
I have always wanted to attempt my own sushi but have yet to do it. I really should though, shouldn’t I.
Sushi and live music? How can you go wrong with that! He’s a smart man.
I absolutely adore taking people around Richmond, especially because we’ve only been here for 5 years, I have to show them why I love it so much. We usually do end up eating quite a bit, though – there’s just so much good food here!
Viceroy looks pretty great, I hadn’t eve heard of it before. The restaurants popping up are almost hard to keep up with. My husband and I did try Lucy’s on 2nd Street this weekend, though, and it was wonderful.
Awe that does sound like such a good weekend. I’m glad you had a great time! I love sushi, I cannot get enough of that stuff. 🙂
