RVA Favorites- Kuba Kuba
I know I’m always talking about how much I love Richmond, but seriously, this city is so wonderful. Even though it’s gotten chilly, I still absolutely love Virginia in the fall. The leaves are gorgeous and I’m so content snuggling down in a blanket with a mug of tea. Of course, even when it’s chilly, I still have to venture out!
Last night I attended the Scout Guide launch at Balleceaux, which was so much fun!
Nothing like a good night of food, drinks, and socializing! It was awesome to meet so many owners of the businesses represented in the guide, and I saw a few bloggers there as well! (Thanks for the photo, Christina!)
Speaking of all things Richmond, I haven’t done an RVA Restaurant Review in awhile, but as I was glancing back through old pictures on my camera, I stumbled across these, and remembered how much I loved Kuba Kuba. Alex and I stopped by there on a Sunday afternoon. Normally, this place gets pretty crowded, but we walked in around 2pm, and coming in on the off hours made it much easier to get a table.
I truthfully don’t know a lot about Cuban food, but much of the menu here was vegetarian, although many things contain eggs so it wouldn’t have an extensive selection for vegans. The egg dish above had asparagus, tomatoes, and roasted corn, plus tons of other veggies. It was quite good, even though I’m not a huge fan of eggs.
Most recently, when Alex and I stopped in for lunch, I went with soup and salad.
The avocado salad (pictured above) comes with tons of avocado, and a light oil based dressing. It also has lots of other fresh vegetables in there, and is served with grilled bread, which is nice and crispy. I like a little bread with my salad, especially if I’m having soup. The black bean soup pictured above is super filling and I usually end up taking half of it home with me. It’s a pretty simple soup (I get it without sour cream) but has a really great flavor. It also seems like a pretty healthy menu option, since it’s mostly beans! Since both the soup and the salad are appetizers, it’s pretty cheap for the combo, and it really is tons of food. Alex went with one of the seafood options, and they have lots of those, so this place would also be great for pescetarians.
The biggest downside I can think of is that the restaurant is pretty small. They reserve the booths for parties of 2 or more, and if you had more than 4 people with you, it could be tough to find a place to sit. I’ve also heard great things about their brunch, but I have a feeling you’d have to come early and be prepared to wait. It would probably be worth it though!

Looks really interesting! I have to admit, I haven’t done a lot of exploring in Richmond, so I know only a few restaurants! I really need to get down there more often and try some out! Also, I love when restaurants have decent sized soups or salads on their appetizer menu! Not only is it cheaper, but they are usually more normal-portioned sized instead of enough to feed an entire family!
It’s so true! And a lot of times, Alex and I will just get a few appetizers and split them! It’s a fun way to try more stuff!
when I was in South Beach, I had Cuban food and it was just wonderful. I would def. do it again.
I love Kuba Kuba – I keep thinking about how I need to get back there soon! I love that avocado salad and that grilled bread is just a huge win as far as I’m concerned, so good! And their coffee, just yes 🙂
Not a huge fan of eggs? What?! Hmm, I may just have to reconsider our friendship, girlie! 😉
I’ve had Cuban food once…at a little place in Nashville called Calypso cafe. It was fantastic! LOTS of healthy options and super cheap! The meal that I got was enough to feed me twice and it only cost around eight bucks! The best part about it was the coconut cornbread muffins…I swear I could’ve made a meal off those alone!
Hope you have a great weekend, sweets! Stay warm!
Haha I really want to like eggs but they’ve just never been a favorite!! Mmm I love cornbread!!
I have actually never had Cuban food.. which is crazy!! I don’t love spicy food, so even Mexican I have to look out for because I love it, just not when it is loaded with spices and peppers. Your food looked fantastic though!!
I LOVE me some Kuba Kuba! I haven’t been in a while but their brunch is pretty amazing!
I definitely need to go there for brunch sometime soon!
That looks like a lot of fun. I agree that Richmond (and similarly VA Beach) have great weather and I love it (except high noon in the summer time). I think I’m a very temperate temperature person myself. Glad you enjoyed yourself!
Andrew and I just had cuban last weekend! We went to this place at 204 e grace, tiny hole in the wall, but so good!
Oh cool! Who knew there was another Cuban place near by?!
Looks like so much fun and the food looks fab!
Looks like a fun event, and you look so pretty!
Miami is a Cuban food hot spot! We’ve been to a few (ie, 2) places but definitely want to try out more. The problem is that a lot of places down here don’t cater to vegetarians..at all.
