A Minnesota Weekend
Alex and I spent most of last week in Minnesota visiting Alex’s family. The reason for the visit was unfortunate, as Alex’s grandfather passed away, but the time with his family was wonderful. I was glad I had the opportunity to meet Alex’s grandpa a few times over our past visits and it was fun getting to hear so many family stories!
So despite the circumstances, we had a nice time catching up with the family. The state fair was in town, so we even got to take trip to “The Great Minnesota Get Together” on Friday!
Obviously, we had to get some cheese curds. If you’ve never had cheese curds that I can’t really describe how amazing these are. Salty, cheesy, greasy… it’s probably good we can only get them once a year. 😉
After a long day at the fair, my mother in law still cooked us up a FEAST. We had 4 different kids of ravioli, 3 of which were vegetarian!
Oh and she made an apple crisp that was AMAZING. And as I mentioned on Instagram, she even found Halo Top ice cream just for me!! Seriously, how sweet is that?!
After the funeral, the family played a couples game of croquet which turned out to be pretty hilarious. I’m not good at it but I like playing! I got some time to talk to Alex’s aunt Holly about GMO’s, “real foods“, and the importance of a food revolution. Seriously, if you get me going on that stuff, I can’t shut up and it’s nice to talk about it with someone who feels just as passionately as I do! Holly, let’s change the world! 😉
This weekend was a great reminder of how important it is to have a time together as a family, particularly during sad times. I feel so lucky to be a Thomson and it was so awesome getting to know Alex’s family even better. I’ll be back here on Wednesday with some real “food stuff” but this weekend was certainly food for the soul.
Do you have any fun family traditions?
Linking up with Katie!
I’m so sorry to hear about Alex’s grandfather but it’s nice that you were able to spend some quality time with his family. And now I’m suddenly craving apple crisp! That looked amazing!
So sorry about Alex’s grandfather. I’m sure he was so happy to see all of you spending time together!
I’m so sorry to hear about the passing. I’ve always wanted to try real cheese curds.
I’ve always wanted to try cheese curds… guess I need to go to Minnesota.
More importantly, however, is how DANG cute that piglet is. I want!
So sorry to her about the passing of Alex’s grandfather. It’s nice to see that everyone was able to come together, celebrate his life & continue making memories of your own.
So sorry to hear about Alex’s grandfather. His family sounds pretty awesome. I’ve never had cheese curds, but it looks like I’m missing out!
Thanks for sharing both the good and the bad!
Sorry about your loss but it looks like a great visit with family, SO wonderful that you all got to be together.
Glad you had a great visit!
Sorry to hear about your husband’s grandfather, Liz. It’s amazing to hear about the wonderful relationship you share with his relatives- they sound wonderful.
