Ginger Smoothie Recipe
This spicy ginger smoothie is the perfect morning pick-me-up. Sweet mango, creamy banana, and spicy ginger create a delicious smoothie!
I love the kick of fresh ginger and this smoothie feels like the perfect way to perk up in the morning. I added mango for sweetness, banana for a creamy texture, and plenty of spinach because it’s an easy way to start my day with greens! If you have some fresh ginger in your fridge, you can make this smoothie in no time!
How to Peel Fresh Ginger
Peeling fresh ginger can be a bit tricky, as the skin is thin and clings closely to the ginger root. Here are a few methods you can use to peel fresh ginger easily:
- Use a spoon: Hold the ginger root in one hand, and use a spoon to scrape off the skin. The spoon will easily remove the thin layers of skin, leaving the ginger root intact. This is the method I prefer to use.
- Use a vegetable peeler: A vegetable peeler can also be used to remove the skin from ginger root. Simply hold the ginger root in one hand and use the peeler to shave off the skin.
- Use a paring knife: If you don’t have a spoon or vegetable peeler on hand, you can use a sharp paring knife to remove the skin from the ginger root. Simply hold the ginger root in one hand and carefully slice off the skin with the knife.
How to Grate Fresh Ginger
Use a microplane or other fine grater to grate the ginger. Simply hold the peeled ginger root in one hand and carefully rub it back and forth over the grater to produce fine, fluffy shreds of ginger. If you do not have a microplane, finely mince the ginger with a knife, then blend it with the almond milk in the blender until smooth.
How to Store Ginger
If you plan to use the ginger within a week or so, you can store it in the refrigerator in a resealable plastic bag. If you want to store the ginger for a longer time, you can freeze it. To freeze ginger, peel the root and slice or chop it into small pieces. Place the ginger in a small airtight container or plastic bag and store it in the freezer for up to 3 months. Frozen ginger can be grated directly from the freezer, or thawed in the refrigerator before use.
Ingredients and Substitutions
- Banana– I used a room-temperature banana but if you want a thicker smoothie, use a frozen banana.
- Mango– I recommend using frozen mango for a thick smoothie.
- Almond milk- This helps create a creamy consistency. You can use any milk you like.
- Ginger– Be sure to use freshly grated ginger. See the instructions above for grating fresh ginger.
- Spinach– This is optional, but I like adding greens to my smoothies! You can skip it if you don’t like spinach, but you really don’t taste it!
This smoothie is so refreshing. I love the kick from the fresh ginger! I also love knowing I’m getting my veggies in.
Tried this with a frozen banana, really refreshing and good stuff coming in the body at the start of the day! Thank you

I enjoyed it so much!
I hardly ever (never) eat breakfast, something my doctor said I need to stop doing. I tried out your ginger smoothie recipe and not only did it fill me up, it gave me tons of energy to get through the morning. And it was amazingly delicious to boot. Thanks!
What a delightful smoothie for color, flavor and texture! We love ginger!
This was such a well balanced smoothie. A lot of times the ginger is so overpowering you cannot enjoy the smoothie but this was perfect.
