Staying Active Over the Holidays
The first of many holidays is coming up and obviously, I can’t wait. But one thing I’m not great about doing during the holidays is exercising. This isn’t that big of a deal, in my opinion, since I usually have a lot going on, but all of those Christmas cookies can start to add up…
So without carving out hours and hours at the gym, here are a few ways you can stay active, wherever the Holidays take you.
1. Go shopping. No money to spend? Window shopping will do. Put on some comfy shoes and take a walk around the mall. If you’re not truly shopping, see if you can pick up the pace! (Warning: this is not recommended on black Friday… you might get stuck in the crowds!)
2. Offer to help. Did you know that vacuuming can burn burn almost 100 calories in just half an hour. So why not help out the family and offer to tidy up? Be the designated grocery shopper on Thanksgiving. There is always that one thing that has to be picked up at the last minute. Get out there and go!
3. Squeeze in mini-workouts. No gym? Couldn’t pack hand weights? Here are a few workout videos that don’t require anything except body weight! (You could even do these barefoot, if you didn’t have room in your suitcase for tennis shoes!)
Now go enjoy a relaxing week with family and friends!
Alright no excuses for me to be inactive! Smart thinking on helping with chores. I didn’t realize vacuuming burned so many calories. Double tasking is my favorite kind of work. Have a great Thanksgiving Liz!
I know, right? I love multi-tasking!
Good tips! I still spend a decent amount of time working out during the holidays. I’d add to sign up for a holiday-themed charity race. You’ll have a goal to work towards and give money to charity. I’m running an 8k next week in Williamsburg that benefits Toys for Tots!
great tips! we do our best to stay active over the holidays with lots of walking, moving around, and getting our short workouts in the morning done 🙂
I try to schedule workouts in the morning during the hoildays. It is so easy to get up and workout before anyone else is up and you don’t have to feel bad about leaving to go workout during the day when people want to spend ‘quality time’ with you.
It’s definitely easier to get it done first! Otherwise there are so many distractions! 🙂
Love your tips! It’s so hard to stay active during the holidays!

I take advantage of days off work and do workouts I don’t normally have the chance to try! Maybe a class at the gym that’s during the day, or a relaxing morning Yoga session when I don’t have to rush off to work.
I know what you mean! It’s nice when you have a little more flexibility in your schedule!
i avoid malls during holiday season – its just too much but mini workout at home sounds nice.
I’m going to be squeezing in a few runs to keep active. I need to at least attempt to counter some of those calories!! Hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving.
We try to make it a family event. We are visiting with family this weekend and will make a point to get on our mountain bikes or hit up a group cardio class. It’s more fun to work out together!
Aw, that’s awesome that you can be active with your family!
I signed up for Tina’s Best Body Bootcamp Holiday Plan and it’s been amazing. I’ve been able to squeeze in 30 minute workouts while at home. I love that they don’t require a lot of equipment and are flexible!
