I love smoothies and this pineapple mango smoothie is my current obsession. It’s naturally sweet thanks to the frozen fruit and I used coconut water to add a light tropical flavor to this smoothie. If you really like coconut, try using coconut-flavored protein powder! If you want a more subtle flavor, stick to vanilla protein powder or you can skip the protein entirely.

Ingredients and Substitutions

  • Mango- I like using frozen mango chunks in smoothies because it makes the texture so thick and creamy.
  • Pineapple– Frozen pineapple adds additional sweetness and creates a deliciously fruity smoothie.
  • Protein Powder– If you want a tropical flavor, try using Clean Simple Eats coconut protein powder. It’s great for coconut lovers! If that’s not your thing, just stick with vanilla. The Clean Simple Eats vanilla whey protein powder is my absolute favorite protein powder of all time. (And trust me, I’ve tried a lot of protein powders.)
  • Coconut Water- This boosts the coconut flavor and adds electrolytes to your smoothie!
  • Coconut Flakes– Tasty coconut flakes are the perfect topping to add a little texture to your smoothie! I used unsweetened flakes to keep the sugar content down.

Tips for Blending Your Smoothie

If you don’t have a powerful blender, blend the protein powder and coconut water first. This helps ensure you get a smooth consistency without any graininess from the protein powder. Once that’s blended, add the frozen fruit. This will ensure that the protein powder gets completely mixed. Need a little more help? Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are smoothies healthy? Smoothies are a great way to enjoy lots of nutrient dense ingredients, but keep an eye on the sugar content. Although this smoothie doesn’t have any added sugar, the pineapple and mango are naturally high in sugar. That’s why I like to use coconut water and protein powder to ensure that this smoothie is actually filling.
  • Can I add greens? Yes! Add a handful of spinach or kale (remove the stems) with the protein powder and coconut water. Blend until smooth, then add the fruit.
  • Can I make a double batch? Yep! You can even freeze extra smoothie in an ice cube tray. Once it’s frozen, pop it out of the tray and store it in a freezer bag. When you’re ready for another smoothie, blend the frozen smoothie with a little extra liquid.
  • Can I use fresh fruit? You can, but the smoothie won’t be as thick. If you want to make a thick smoothie, it’s best to use frozen fruit.
  • Can I add vegetables? Yes! Try adding 1/2 cup of frozen cauliflower florets. You won’t notice and it’ll make the smoothie extra thick!

My Favorite Blenders

I’ve tested a lot of blenders and my all-time favorite blender is my Vitamix. It’s extremely powerful and it can blend just about anything into a perfect drink. I know they’re expensive though, so a great lower-cost option is this Kitchen Aid blender which is less than $100. I have it and I’m impressed with how well it blends frozen fruit. I also have this Nutribullet which is great for smaller, sippable smoothies. No matter what kind of blender you have, read my tips for how to get the best results from your blender.
