Description

Buttery, caramelized cabbage and onions, tossed with tender egg noodles, make the ultimate budget-friendly comfort food. A classic recipe known as haluski, this dish is quick, cozy, and deeply satisfying!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
  • 1 head green cabbage (1 1/2 pounds), cored and thinly sliced
  • 2 onions, halved and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons table salt, plus more for cooking noodles
  • 16 ounces wide egg noodles
  • Fresh dill for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add cabbage, onions, water, garlic, and salt. Cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 15 minutes.
  3. Remove lid and continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are deep golden brown and sticky, about 25 minutes.
  4. Meanwhile, bring 4 quarts of water to a boil. Add noodles and one teaspoon salt. Cook until tender, then drain and return to the pot.
  5. Turn off heat, add the cabbage mixture and remaining 2 tablespoons butter to the noodles. Toss until the butter is melted and everything is well combined.

  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with dill, if using.
