I love making smoothies, and this banana berry smoothie is one of the recipes I find myself making over and over again. In fact, I made it all summer before I realized I hadn’t shared a recipe for it! The formula is so simple, it almost seems silly to share, but if you’re looking for some smoothie inspiration, I hope this helps!

Sometimes I make my smoothie a drinkable smoothie, and sometimes I enjoy it as a smoothie bowl. I love adding toppings, and this one makes a great spoonable smoothie!

banana berry smoothie ingredients

Ingredients and Substitutions

  • Berries– I used a frozen berry blend that contains raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries. You can use a blend of all three or just pick one. It’s totally up to you! Some blends contain strawberries and those tend to be a bit sweeter.
  • Banana– For a thick smoothie, use a frozen banana. For a drinkable smoothie, you can just use a regular banana. If you don’t like bananas, try using frozen mango or frozen pineapples instead.
  • Yogurt– I used Greek yogurt for extra protein, but any type of yogurt is fine. I recommend using plain yogurt since the berries and bananas have plenty of sweetness. Feel free to substitute plant-based yogurt.
  • Milk– I used unsweetened vanilla almond milk, but any dairy milk or coconut milk is fine.

Tips for Making a Great Smoothie

I make a lot of smoothies, so I’ve learned a few tricks for how to get the best results. Here are a few of my best smoothie tips:

  • If you want to add protein powder or greens, blend those up with the liquid before you add any other ingredients. This helps blend them completely so you don’t end up with a gritty texture.
  • For a super thick smoothie, use frozen fruit and add the minimum amount of liquid needed to blend the smoothie. I have a whole post on how to make a super thick smoothie so if you want to make a spoonable smoothie, read that!
  • Adding sweetener to this smoothie is optional. I found that the bananas and berries had enough sweetness for me. But if you like a sweeter taste you can add a little honey or maple syrup.
  • This recipe is also a great way to prevent food waste. If you have spotty banans or berries that are on the verge of going bad, put them in the freezer and save them for your next smoothie! Be sure to peel the bananas before freezing.

Is a banana smoothie healthy?

Some smoothies are loaded with sugar and don’t have much protein or fiber. In fact, a lot of the smoothies sold at popular chains are loaded with sugar and not much else. Luckily, you can make a healthy, delicious smoothie at home! This smoothie uses fruit for natural sweetness and yogurt for protein. Since we’re using berries, there is also a lot of fiber in this recipe which can keep you satisfied for longer.

Can I have a smoothie every day?

Absolutely! There are tons of tasty smoothie recipes loaded with good-for-you ingredients, so you can enjoy a smoothie every day while eating various fruits and vegetables! I even have a list of meal replacement smoothies if you want something extra filling. And if you’re watching your sugar, check out my list of smoothies without fruit.

The Best Blender for Smoothies

For the best smoothie, you’ll want to use a high-powered blender, like a Vitamix or Blendtec. They can blend anything from almonds to ice. These are the kind of blenders that restaurants use because they’re quick, effective, and easy to clean. To clean it, all you have to do is run the blender with soapy water and then rinse it. I absolutely love my Vitamix. I’ve had it for ten years and I still use it at least a few times a week. But I know that might not fit into your budget, so if you’re looking for a cheaper option, check out this Kitchen Aid blender! I’ve had it for a few years and it’s surprisingly powerful for the price.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I make this recipe vegan? Yes! Just use non-dairy yogurt and non-dairy milk.
  • Can I make it sweeter? Absolutely! If your berries aren’t very sweet, you may want to add a drizzle of honey or maple syrup for sweetness.
  • Can I add ice? You definitely can, and I recommend it if berries and banana haven’t been frozen. You may want to reduce the liquid just to prevent the smoothie from tasting watered down.
  • Can I double the recipe? Definitely! In fact, sometimes doubling the recipe can make it easier to blend, especially if you want to make a thick smoothie,
  • Can I make it into a smoothie bowl? Yes! Use frozen berries and frozen banana slices. Use only as much milk as necessary to get the smoothie moving in the blender. Feel free to add your favorite toppings! I love shredded coconut, granola, and chia seeds.
