Corn Tortillas vs. Flour Tortillas

I love Mexican food. Have I made that clear? I do. If you need proof, just look at this TVP tacos, this tostada, or these quesadillas. It’s easy to find vegetarian options. And it’s delicious.

Now let’s answer the age old question… corn or flour tortillas?

I thought I’d do a little head to head comparison. Obviously, it ultimately comes down to which you like better. But if you’ve ever wondered about the differences, here they are!

Calories & Fat

Corn Tortillas- Usually about 70 calories and 1 gram of fat. Keep in mind, sometimes these are a little smaller than flour tortillas. These typically don’t have much fiber or protein in them.

Flour Tortillas- These can vary widely. A typical one has about 100-150 calories. (If you get the high fiber kind, it will be lower) and about 3.5 g of fat. If you do get whole wheat, it will back a little extra protein and fiber. The “white” kind don’t have much to offer.

Ingredients

Corn- These usually have a much smaller ingredient list, so if that’s important to you, these might be your best bet.

Flour- These typically contain a lot of ingredients, but not necessarily bad ones. Keep an eye on the ingredients and make sure they’re not sneaking in things like high fructose corn syrup (you’d be surprised) or hydrogenated oils.

Allergies

Corn allergies are pretty rare, so this is usually the safe choice for people with allergies. If you’re gluten intolerant, corn tortillas give you a great gluten free option.

Obviously, flour tortillas contain gluten.

Taste

This one is subjective, obviously. Corn tortillas tend to be a little flakier, where as flour tortillas are usually chewy. While this might not exactly be a taste thing, flour tends to work better for wraps and burritos, as the corn ones have a tendency to break apart if they’re wrapped to tightly. Corn tortillas are perfect for tostadas, tacos, etc.

Price

Both are pretty cheap, although corn tend to always be cheap, and some of the high fiber flour tortillas can get a little pricy. Still, if you’re going for flour tortillas, it’s probably worth it to get whole wheat! (And again, double check the ingredients list!)

  1. I prefer flour tortillas, but I buy Trader Joe’s whole wheat, high-fiber, low-carb ones — they’re great! Only 45 cals and 1 g fat, plus 7 g fiber and 4 g protein! They taste fine too :)

  2. You know what? I don’t think I’ve every compared the two so I’m not sure which I like better. I guess I should do a comparison. Yes, some of them can be Very pricey. There’s a brand, Ole, which has a variety that comes out to 1 Point on WW but they are almost $5 a package! Not worth it. Have a great day, Liz!

  9. Since almost 100% of the corn in this country is GMO, I’d stay away from the corn tortilla. As for the higher calorie count in the flour, everything in moderation.

    • Great point! Whole Food’s store brand (365) does have organic corn tortillas that are made with non-GMO corn, so I’d definitely check those out!

  10. I prefer the taste of flour tortillas, and the corn tortillas most likely contain GMO corn. And now I am going to look for the wheat, high-fiber, low-carb flour tortillas from Trader Joe’s that Taylor recommended!

    • The Trader Joe’s high fiber tortillas taste pretty great, and they’re really low in calories, but high in fiber and protein!

  11. I usually eat flour tortillas because they are softer and more versatile. But a corn tortilla can hit the spot in some cases. I made mama pea’s sweet potato and black bean enchiladas this week with corn tortillas and it was sooooo good.

  20. This was a great idea! I love hearing the comparisons between two products. Sadly I’m one of those who is allergic to both wheat and corn :( Haha. But, I think I’ve only ever had flour tortillas before. I definitely preferred corn chips though over flour tortilla chips for things like taco salads or chili, chips and cheese.

  21. I like them both! I think a lot of it depends on the recipe, too. There are some recipes in which a corn tortilla just would not work, so flour it is (and vice versa). But as far as taste goes, I think they’re both great!

  22. I like both kinds of tortillas, but I probably prefer flour tortillas overall. It depends on what I’m making though. For tacos, I only ever use corn tortillas! Flour tortillas are just so versatile – quesadillas, wraps, burritos, pizza… I try to keep a supply on hand whenever possible! My favorite is La Tortilla Factory’s wraps. So soft and loaded with fiber and protein! :)

  23. Generally speaking, I think that I prefer the taste of flour tortillas, but I like the ingredient list/nutritional facts associated with the corn tortillas. I think that we just need to combine the two of them! ;)

  24. I like both kinds but my body doesn’t do well with wheat and actually it isn’t great with corn either but it is way better than wheat. I’m actually going to maybe try and make my own wheat free ones when I get some more time to experiment.

  25. Mexican is DEF my favorite food. Gosh I could have it everyday. Chips and guac is enough to keep me satisfied :)
    I do like both, especially if Im having a burrito I need a flour tortilla, but I love corn I think. I love heating it up on the stove and getting it nice and soft. Plus I love that they are the perfect size to just throw some cheese on and heat up really quick while Im cooking dinner. Its like my little appetizer before the meal ;)

  31. I pretty much agree with everything you said. I never liked corn tortillas because the flavor was so strong….until I moved to Austin and had “real” fresh ones. It is a REVELATION. I actually just recently stumbled upon–by stealing food from my roommate :)–a brand of corn tortillas that are a little chewier and lighter than I liked. When I went to Mexico, I learned how to make homemade flour tortillas, and in that region they are thicker, and the dough is made like traditional biscuit dough. Obviously, they were very different, but INCREDIBLE.

  33. If you put an enchilada in a flour tortilla or a burrito in a corn tortilla here in Arizona you are committing a mortal sin. We take pride in our homemade tortillas here, and we don’t mix them with the wrong dishes.

  34. If you want soft tacos and are using corn tortillas, you can put three or four into a sandwich bag, close it and microwave them for about 15 – 20 sec. It will create condensation within the bag and soften them.
