3 Tips for a Successful Dinner Party

This weekend was a bit of a blur, with lots of party-hosting happening at our apartment. I love a house full of people, so this was totally my kind of weekend. Because it was a little crazy, I don’t have a lot to share with you today, but here are a few tips I pulled together from last night. These are my tips for hosting a successful dinner party. Enjoy 😉

Tip #1: Make a recipe you’ve made before.

tvp tacos for cooking club

I whipped up the essentials for these TVP tacos, but left all the ingredients separately, so people could customize their tacos based on their preferences. I wasn’t sure if everyone would want to try textured vegetable protein, but I had black beans, peppers, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, and cheese, so each could make a custom taco.

Tip #2: Invite friends with exceptional cooking abilities, which will ensure that you have an amazing spread of food.

I’m pretty lucky to have so many friends who are amazing in the kitchen. Look at that mango salsa! And trust me, that Tres Leches cake was just as delicious as it looks.

Tip #3: Don’t forget to invite a guest of honor, in our case, Mr. Darcy.

Mr. Darcy

Except for him sticking his tail in my margarita, I’m totally in love with the furball. Isn’t he adorable?

Oh, and just in case you wanted a recipe out of today’s post, check this one out from a new-to-me blog:

Yes, they were delicious.

Do you have any tips to hosting a dinner party?

  1. Those pineapple margaritas look fantastic!! I am a sucker for a good margarita. Those HAVE to make a dinner party great, right? 😉

  2. yum, the pineapple margarita looks fantastic! I love having friends over for app’s and dinner!

  3. Pineapple margs?!?! Oh yes. This must happen. I think your tips are great and would add that I like to make sure I serve something that can be mostly prepared ahead of time, that way I’m not spending the entire time in the kitchen cooking and sipping my pineapple margarita alone! 😉

  4. Love the blog Gimme Some Oven! Check out her quinoa granola today…looks fabulous. All great tips and I’ve got a little dinner party coming up….I’m bookmarking that pineapple margarita!

  5. Mr. Darcy! Haha, what a cutie. Looks like a great party, Liz!

  6. Personally, potlucks are my favorite because it ensures that a variety of food will be present, and it allows you, as the host/hostess, to focus on having fun and spending time with your guests!

  7. Do as much as you can BEFORE the party starts. Also, don’t get stressed about it. People are just happy to get together and eat. 🙂

Um, I need to know more about this Tres Leches…perhaps it is a curse on my dairy wary stomach, but tres leches is perhaps my favorite type of cake EVER.

  8. I agree with Parita, potlucks are my favorite! You’re bound to find something that you like, even if it is your own dish and you get a feel of your friend’s eating preferences that way.

  9. Cute post!! I try and prep as much as possible before having guests so I can enjoy their company once they arrive. Pineapple margaritas? Sounds amazing!

  10. I am ready for some margarita. i have experienced having food that is customizable allows a lot of interaction among guests. I always try to stick to lot of make ahead food so that i have things ready when guests arrive

  11. Sounds like a fun weekend!
Making a recipe that’s familiar to you is such a smart idea. Who wants to go through the nerves and uncertainty of trying a new dish when you’re having people over? Tried and true is where it’s at 🙂
One thing I like is to have a prepared pitcher of water with fresh basil and lemon slices in it- that way there’s an interesting, flavorful (and low cost!) option for those that don’t drink alcohol.

  12. I’ll take one (two or even three) of those pineapple margarita’s please 🙂

  13. Definitely so true about cooking something you’ve made before! I think having people bring something can be helpful and trying to keep it casual to keep the pressure off is good too!

  14. Oh my goodness pineapple margaritas this is genius! Margaritas are my go-to drink and pineapple is one of my favorite fruits so I’m definitely going to try this one. Oh and I love your furry guest! I had a west highland terrier growing up, they are such sweet dogs!

  15. Love Mexican food themed parties! I always try to do something I’ve made before but also try something new. I just love to try out new recipes and a dinner party is always a good excuse to try out some fancy desserts or tantalizing appetizers 🙂

  16. That sounds like so much fun! And everything is so nice when you have guests bring dishes…less stress on you and they feel better to be able to help!

  17. WOW! Look at all of that glorious food! ANd the pup is super sweet, too! LOVE all the pics!

  18. Invite me next time! 🙂 Thanks for the tips. I have two couples coming over this Friday for dinner. Better to be prepared!

  19. Definitely make a recipe you’re confident in!! Never make a recipe you’ve never done before – AH HA HA!!

  20. I love the second tip 🙂 Tres Leches cake is one of my favorites by the way! SO good. I have a few really talented cook friends; however, most of us just cook basic meals – nothing too fancy! I do have one friend that owns her own baking business so I’m always excited when it’s her turn to bring dessert to our women’s group! 😀
