Exposing the Mess

I’m not the world’s most organized person. I’m not. (Mom, if you’re reading this, stop rolling your eyes at the understatement.) It’s not that I’m messy (ok, maybe I’m a little of that) it’s just that I seemed to have too much stuff and not enough space!

Thankfully, I met Lindsay, who’s organization skills and patience were a perfect match for me and my room.

She spent the better part of last weekend in my room, helping me dig through piles of clothes, mountains of shoes, and boxes of junk, until I found myself knee deep in stuff I didn’t even know I had. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to be organized… I just wasn’t sure how. It was overwhelming (and yes, there were a few moments I just had to take a deep breath.)

After we tossed out 4 bags of trash and tied up 4 more bags for Goodwill, I felt… relieved. I had purged the excess of my life. And now, I actually had space to organize what was left.

I have an awkward shaped closet, and we weren’t working with a lot of space, so Lindsay had her work cut out for her. Thankfully, she’s quite creative, and knew how to handle the space.

But it wasn’t just my closet. She also found places and spaces for all of the things that were previously littering my dresser, table, and any surface I could find.

Look at what she did with my jewelry!

I’m pretty sure I was wearing the same things over and over again, because I they were the things at the top fo the random pile. Now I can actually see everything I own!

And my bathroom! Oh my bathroom. I am a “throw everything into a basket and call it a day” kind of person. Which is actually probably the most inefficient way to organize. Lindsay helped me create different baskets for everyday things, hair things, extra make up, lotions (uh, I may or may not have found 6 different bottles of tanning lotion) and travel size items. My morning routine is so much simpler, and I’m no longer digging around in search of bobby pins!

If you’re looking to organize your closet, room, or life, you should totally check out Lindsay’s blog, because her services are for hire, and I highly recommend them!! You can read her whole post on organizing my room here!

It’s nice to have a place for everything!

Do you have any organizing tips to share?

Comments

  1. I just got two really cute jewelry “trees” for the jewelry I’ve accumulated over the last few years. I used to not be big into accessories. No idea what happened… lol

  2. I love an organised closet. I had a major clear out a few weeks ago and it felt great!

  3. My secret to organizing is to consistently keep throwing things out when I know I don’t need them anymore…I probably do it once a month. And that old saying that everything should have a place is totally true!

Looks great! I’m the opposite, a serial “throw it out if you haven’t used it in 3 months” type. I’ve always got a Goodwill box that I’m tossing things into, and just yesterday I combed through all my clothes to take a load to consignment. I wish I could apply the same enthusiasm to washing dishes though!

  5. Love the organized space! My organizing tip is to just go to the Container Store :)

  6. We have the same sneakers! (The blue/pink/black Asics Tigers, in case you were concerned…) LOVE the reorganization! It feels so good when everything has a home.

  7. Purging feels oh so good! I am in the mood to simplify my life lately.

  8. How lovely of Lindsay to do that and it looks great now… when I do major organisations like that, which isn’t often, I have to keep going in whichever room to remind myself how good it looks :-)
Needing money is quite a good organisation tip for me; I’m doing a boot fair next week and have sorted loads of stuff for it!

  9. Well done Liz!! I’ve shared my thoughts on keeping things streamlined – great to see you dove in and what a difference! Great that you got help, smart!

  10. I do a good closet cleanse about once every quarter. It’s funny how I always find things to get rid of. There’s something very freeing about not being attached to things.
It’s more of a time saver but now I load silverware together in the dishwasher–forks go in one area of the basket, knives, etc. Makes emptying and re-organizing the drawer very efficient!

Wow how awesome!! I hate things not being organized, but I def have the same problem as you. Just too much stuff and too little space!

  12. I need Lindsay to come to my house… I have no idea why I have such a hard time letting go of clothes that I haven’t worn in 2+ years. Pack rat!

  13. your mess is my normal hahah!!

  14. Can you send her over my way?! haha. My house isn’t that bad, but next to my minimalist boyfriend I look like a total hoarder. So maybe I’ll buy a basket or two for the bathroom.
And some more jewelry, because your collection is very impressive.

  15. It was great meeting you as well! I can’t wait for the next meet-up:)
