[Veggie] Burgers

Maybe it’s because it’s summer time. Or maybe it’s because they’re really easy to make. Either way, I’ve been eating a lot more veggie burgers recently. For some reason, when you say “veggie burger” to a carnivore, they get this horrible idea that a veggie burger is some sort of grey-ish patty, with unidentified pieces and parts of dirty and tree bark.

But that’s not the case with these. These are full of delicious and healthy ingredients. Which is more than they can probably say for that frozen patty of… something.

All judgement aside, I’ve tried and tested some new veggie burger recipes, so if you’re looking for something to whip up for dinner, give these a try!

Lindsay and I made these yesterday. We stuck pretty close to a recipe we found online here. Then we stuffed it into a pita with cucumbers and plain greek yogurt. Refreshing and delicious.

I’ve also been cooking up some old favorites:

Kidney Bean Burgers & Black Bean Oat Burgers

Sometimes I just eat them on top of spinach. Sometimes I eat them plain. Sometimes I cover them in ketchup. Really, any way you cut it, you can’t go wrong. They’re easily cooked in batches & frozen, to be used on a lazy night.

The black bean burger from Carytown Burgers & Fries will always be one of my favorites.

And Burger Bach has some great options for both vegetarians and meat eaters as well.

As for frozen burgers, the Spicy Black Bean burger from Morningstar Farms is one of my favorites! So if you’re Β trying to eat less meat (or you’re already a vegetarian) don’t skip out on summer cookouts! Just BYOBurger and come prepared with one of these alternatives! (Tip: If you’re cooking veggie burgers on a grill, it’s best if they’re frozen, since they are a little more inclined to fall apart!)

  5. There’s a restaurant here that serves crispy quinoa burgers wrapped up in lettuce cups instead of buns. It’s seriously the most amazing veggie burger EVER. I’m totally going to try yours to see if I can duplicate the deliciousness!

  6. I love a good veggie burger. In Madison there was a place that had homemade walnut burgers. So good! Though I haven’t been to a Chili’s in 10 yrs they used to have a really tasty black bean burger.

  8. I LOVE veggie burgers!! They’re soo much fun to make than the regular burgers since the possibilities are endless, and I just love the “earthy” flavors. I’m not huge fan of the frozen patties, though. That garlic quinoa burger looks awesome! Love the whole assembly too!

  10. Wow, these all look amazing!! Thanks for trying out and reviewing them for us! To be fair to meat eaters, some veggie burgers are a bit grey and embarrassing, and taste a bit like cardboard. But these ones look FANTASTIC.

    In terms of my favourite veggie burger- I’m partial to a portobello halloumi burger! So tasty πŸ™‚

  12. MMMM the spicy black bean burger from Morningstar is def my fave! The garden veggie ones by Morning star are pretty good too.

  13. Veggie burgers ARE the perfect food to make huge batches of and freeze–quick, easy salad toppers (or, yes, ketchup-accompaniers) on days when you just don’t want to cook. I absolutely love the “chickpea cutlet” recipe from the veganomicon, I just shape it and use it like a burger rather than whatever a “cutlet” would entail.

    A blog reader [slash] friend-through-blogging turned me on to the Don Lee Veggie Patties sold at Costco. Not only are they GIANT, they are delicious. Not as protein-packed as my ‘go to’ recipe involving beans and grains (of whatever you’ve got on hand, really), but SO good for crumbling on salad…

    In fact, I might need to go to Costco when I’m in Richmond this weekend just to get some…

  17. I love veggie burgers also, but I don’t eat them nearly often enough seeing as my die-hard meat and potatoes fiance always makes comments when I make them. But I may have to try some of these ideas and maybe I can even convince (*cough * trick *cough*) him into trying one!

    • Haha I feel like the black bean ones are the best “intro” veggie burger for meat eaters! I think if you try to make them eat the ones that are actually supposed to taste like meat… they’ll probably fall short!

    • I go through the same thing with my boyfriend. I’ve tricked him many times… even with vegan recipes!!! He LOVES cheesecake, and I made him the vegan cheesecake out Alicia Silverstone’s book, The Kind Life, and he LOVED it. He still eats meat, but I think he has learned to appreciate vegetarian and vegan cuisine a bit more now. πŸ™‚

  18. You’re making me drooool. Bean burgers are my favorite. I went through a phase a few months ago where I seriously made them every week. I need to make them again because they are sooo easy!

  21. i love veggie burgers as a quick go-to protein source during the week. but, i recently had to give up soy and having a HARD time finding veggie burgers without them. so far i have discovered 2: Amy’s Sonoma and Qorn. any other suggestions?

  22. I LOVE veggie burgers as well. I have a go-to black bean burger recipe that I make a lot. Another fav of mine is the Mediterranean bean burger from Let Them Eat Vegan. It’s amazing.

    As for the frozen varieties, I like Amy’s California and Texas burgers, Sunshine Burgers and the locally made No Bull burgers.

  23. I think I’m in the rare minority of meat eaters who actually really likes veggie burgers. The best one I ever had was made with ground almonds, flaxseed and coconut oil. When I’m in a rush, Amy’s are always a good go to.

  24. Ohmyyy these look good. About two years ago I had a brief love affair with veggie burgers that’s since gone by the wayside. This post has reignited the fire. I definitely want to try that first recipe for the quinoa burgers!

  27. I WISH I could say the best veggie burger I had was a taro patty (in Hawaii) but it was SO gross! Zero flavor. I’ll probably never get over it. I’m a huge fan of Mama Pea’s Thai chickpea burgers, or a grilled Bella burger with balsamic & goat cheese. πŸ˜€

  28. Love the bean burger at Cap Ale House, it’s so good and that cilantro lime slaw they top with is so good! All of your homemade ones look fabulous too though yum! Hope y’all enjoy Kabab Grill later this week, sorry I’ll miss out since I’m at the beach, I really enjoyed that place when I went a few weeks ago.

  29. Great post Liz! I really like the Morningstar Farms spicy black bean burgers too, and I can’t get enough of the No Bull burgers out of Charlottesville. However I prefer to make my veggie burgers from scratch using whatever I have on hand. My favorites are my own Vegology Quinoa Burgers and Mama Pea’s Yukon Gold White Bean Basil Burgers.

  30. Mmm, veggie burgers can be so good. Or they can really suck. Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be much of a middle ground.
    And the one time I’ve been to Richmond my friend took us to Carytown and I got a falafel burger from the Galaxy. It was so stinky good, but then I’m pretty sure it was fried, so of course it was good.
