Energized Wednesday

I’m generally a high energy person. Which is a nice way of saying sometimes I drive people around me crazy because I can be a little too perky. Sorry, I can’t really help it.

But Monday, after a less-than-quality night of sleep, I was dragging. I had a two cups of coffee but I was still feeling like I was in a bit of a haze. I decided to go for high energy foods, to keep me from nodding off at my desk becoming one of the people on True Life: I’m Addicted to Caffiene. Yes, I watched that on Monday. Quality TV.

So these are my energy packed eats from yesterday!

Breakfast

Breakfast was nothing crazy new, but I did find a stray jar of White Chocolate Wonderful in my pantry. Just when I thought I was on the verge of being out of peanut butter. It was a miracle.

1 banana, handful of ice, 1/2 scoop whey protein powdered, 2 handfuls of spinach, 5 drops of liquid vanilla stevia, pinch of xanthan gum, plus a little peanut butter.

Morning Snacking

I normally have a piece of fruit, but I knew I needed a little something more substantial so I had half a pack of these.

Lunch

I packed the leftovers from this dinner, so I was glad to have such a protein packed lunch on hand. Broccoli and tempeh. Protein packed, and quite delicious. Not to mention cheaper and healthier than what’s served in the cafeteria!

Afternoon Snack

I finished off the pack of the aforementioned nuts, and also crunched on a giant fuji apple.

Dinner

As soon as I got home from work, I had a bowl of 0% chobani and some frozen blueberries, plus a little more Samoa Granola. A snack with a combination of carbs and proteins (like this one) really gives me a pick me up. It powered me through a quick workout, before I ran off to meet some awesome Fashion Bloggers.

No, I didn’t get a pink table cloth. I ate it from the comfort of my bed, while catching up with my google reader ;)

Dessert

After the fashion bloggers meet up, I grabbed fro-yo at Sweet Frog with Lindsay, Taylor and Brett.

There has been a frozen yogurt turf war going on in Carytown. Sweet Frog has been there for a little while, and now Yapple frozen yogurt moved in right next door. I’ve tried both, so I can officially say that my heart remains with Sweet Frog. Chocolate + cake batter is the best combination, in case you were wondering.

Sadly, the frozen yogurt gave me way too much energy (I blame the sugar!) and I could not fall asleep again. I don’t know why I’ve been having so much trouble sleeping lately, but even my white noise tracks aren’t helping.

What are your favorite “energy” foods?

Comments

  1. My favorite is a green smoothie! Nothing gives me more energy in the morning than that added spinach to my protein, milk, banana, and blueberries.

  2. I can’t even tell you how jealous I am of your fro-yo pic…for whatever reason you can’t find fro-yo places in my neck of the woods (Eastern Canada) and it makes me so sad. For now I’ll just imagine chocolate fro-yo with added pretzel pieces..yum!

  3. We tried out Yapple this past weekend, didn’t think their cake batter was as good as sweet frog but liked all the others i tried. Crazy that there’s a fro yo war goin on tho! My fave energy food/drink is Amazing Grass chocolate – that’s stuff is a miracle in a packet lol :P

  4. gah your dessert looks so good! my favorite energy food is coffee..does that count? lol

  5. SO sad I missed the fashion meet-up, but being in DC has been a nice, rewarding break. [I'm relaxed enough to actually READ a blog!]

I want some of that tempeh right now. I’ve been hugely obsessed with tempeh lately…

High energy foods? And you are saying coffee doesn’t count, right? [I kid. I kid.]

Nuts, by far. You can’t keep me away from the nut butter!

Fitmixer liquid aminos are my go-to for GYM energy, though.

  6. I tend to eat crap when I am tired! So, I always make a conscious effort of eating light when I am tired to keep me energized. That and coffee of course. :)

  7. I’ve been so tired lately too! I blame this time of year & the overload of daytime hours. The sun is up before 5am & it doesn’t get dark until close to 11pm. LOTS of water, green trea, green smoothies, salads seem to help me from falling into a coma. :) Great idea with the tempeh & broccoli. I don’t know why I’ve never thought of combining just the two. Trying it this week!

  8. Yum, I have a tempeh craving now! and a frozen yogurt craving :) Yes- I definitely notice a difference in my energy when I combine protein and carbs! My favourite energy food isn’t a food- it’s water! I think I slump mid afternoon when I haven’t had enough water and am actually a bit dehydrated.

  9. I just realized that I have never put pretzels in my froyo before. I’ve been missing out!!

    • It’s one of my favorites!!! The sweet & salty combo is the best! (And sometimes they have the peanut butter filled pretzels… and that just takes it to a whole other level!)

  10. My favorite energy food is DARK CHOCOLATE! It is just so delicious. ;)

  11. How fun to have a fashion blogger meetup! Looks like some good eats :)

  12. mmmm looks great!! I wish I could do smoothies for breakfast everyday, but I can only do them on no work days. Otherwise Id be in the bathroom every 5 minutes at work! (was that TMI? sorry I have a tiny bladder and apparently no filter lol)

  13. I’m addicted to coffee too :) Froyo sounds so delicious right now!

  14. I’ve been daying dreaming about froyo and this post definitely did not help! ;) I’m addicted to Diet Coke. Seriously. If I don’t have one a day I get crabby because I need caffeine and I’m not a coffee person!

  15. Mine would definitely be either dark chocolate or peanut butter! And your froyo looks delish. Adding pretzels = genius. I love the mixture of salty and sweet foods.

  16. My favorite energy food would probably have to be greek yogurt. I love it! And it actually fills me up so that’s a major plus :)

  17. What a SUPER CUTE blog you have!! Loving it!! And I agree…cake batter is soooo yummmmm. Red Velvet is pretty bomb too.

  18. So I can say that I haven’t tried either fro-yo place in Carytown – I’m not much of a fro-yo person and when I want ice cream, I just go to Bevs.

My favorite energy foods: almonds, BCAAs, peanut butter, and chocolate of course :)

  19. There is no better feeling than thinking you have no peanut butter only to learn that you do! And I love fruit smoothies for energy. Or, yeah, a big ol’ cup of coffee…

  20. Gotta love having healthy leftovers for lunch!

  21. Loveeee sweet frog!!!!

  22. Wow, looks like a delicious day of meals! I eat dinner while catching up with my google reader too! Your fro-yo toppings look tasty!

  23. Looks like a yummy day of eats! Question for you….what brand stevia do you use? I’m looking to try stevia again. Also, I live near Richmond and just discovered your blog. I am loving reading about all the local places you go.

  24. Oooh yummy eats, girl!

  25. Mmmm everything looks so delicious. I totally want to get on the smoothie. I’m totally a high energy morning person. It will be like 5 am and I’M LIKE HELLOOOO WORLD lol

  26. Banana’s or chocolate – the two have gotten me through many a tiering day, or have been excellent pre-exam fuel.

And your dinner totally looks like something I will be having this evening ;)
    Have a great week!

  27. If breakfast in bed is good, dinner in bed’s even better!
I think I might be one of those caffeine people though; I’m a coffee fiend at work… should do something about that really :-)
I like porridge for breakfast for energy and nuts as a snack afterwards.

  28. We just got a Sweet Frog in Greensboro. I haven’t been yet, but I’m pretty loyal to Red Mango (stevia sweetened instead of regular sugar and more fruity flavors), but I’m thinking about giving it a go soon.
As far as sleeping goes…try working out in the morning or at lunch. That may suck at first, but I think the energy boost from later workouts often keep me up.

  29. That all looks soo good! I’m jealous.

  30. Oh, I’ve never tried Sweet Frog, but we have one near us. Better than TCBY?

  31. Typically nuts and dried fruit are my go-to when I’m down on energy, but I tend to overdo it! Often cold water helps :)

  32. Your tempeh dinner looks right up my street, now I am craving tempeh! :D

  33. Usually an apple and a hand-full of almonds, peanuts, or pistachios. A friend of mine in grad school always ate an apple during the break – this would be at about 7pm–she said she’d read that the crunching does something to keep you awake.
