Bean Burger > Meat Burger

Ok so I have to be honest, I don’t even remember what a hamburger tastes like. I haven’t had one since… middle school? Blech. So maybe I’m not an expert (ok, I’m totally not an expert) when it comes to Veggie burgers vs. Hamburgers, but let me tell you, this recipe turned out fantastic! So I must share.

I was inspired by Angela’s Vegan Black Bean Burger recipe, but as I got going, I ended up making some changes here and there… mostly based on what I had available. So here’s what I ended up with:

Veggie-tastic Bean Burger (Makes 3 large patties)

  • 1 can black beans
  • 1 1/2 cups baby carrots (makes about 3/4 cup grated carrots)
  • 1/3 cup oats
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground flax seeds (mixed with 1 1/2 tbs warm water)
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp minced onion
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 tsp garlic salt
  • 1/4 tsp coarse sea salt
  • dash black pepper

I threw the carrots in the vitamix until they were nice and chopped, then I added in the oats and blended for another ~10 seconds or so. Then I added in almost the whole can of black beans (save a few for mixing in at the end), the olive oil, the flax “egg”, and all the lovely spices.

As I warned Sarena (the non-dairy queen!) it sort of looked like… someone puked in my blender.

However, after baking it for about 40 minutes (20 min on each side) it was ready for tasting! Since I didn’t have buns (and buns are over rated) I just threw these patties on some stir fried veggies. (Red, yellow & green peppers, plus some onions.)

I think my “dinner guest” enjoyed it as well. Then again, he’s the one who made me tofu… so I think I he’s adapting to my veggie addiction ;)

Thank you all for the tips for getting rid of my cold! I drank lots of tea, loaded up on fruit, and ate some chocolate (Thanks for that last one, Emma!)

Are you a traditional Burger & Bun person, or do you like to load up with veggies? (Clearly, I’m into “Veggie on Veggie” action. teehee.)

  1. I love this idea! I’ve never thought of making my own veggie burgers! These would be absolutely perfect for me! I’m allergic to soy and all veggie burgers from the grocery store have soy in them, so now I will be able to make some without it! Yes!! Thanks so much for this recipe girl!

  2. mmmm I LOVE making bean burgers!! My hubby doesnt like them (of course) so I usually just freeze the remaining patties for future lunches :)

  3. totally agree w/ your title…love that!

  4. For some reason, I haven’t dared make my own veggie burger yet, but LOVE them. I wonder if I could make a mini one in my magic bullet…hmmm.

Oh and as long as I have mustard and onions for my burger, I’m happy =)

  5. I am a burger plus bun person — yes most are overrated, but a good bakery fresh bun is so delicious. But I do like a good burger crumbled over a salad — bean or beef, I like both!

  6. I can go bun-less but I looooove a good bun on my veg burgers! =)

  7. I’m also a huge fan of hot veggie on veggie action!

  8. I like it old school with some sort of bun. I rarely crave a burger, but when I do I want a burger. With tons of condiments. And lettuce. And onion. And a side of fries. And now I’m hungry.

  9. i either go with veggies or on a sammie thin! no thick buns for me!

  10. Oh I am a carb girl to the core, so yes, I love a big fat bun, and I have a big fat arse to prove it :D
    *kisses* HH

  11. Somehow all the best tasting food looks a bit yucky, it looks quite pretty on top of your veggies though.
Burger and bun is an indulgance, but I also love it with salad or veggies. Burgers also ask to be paired with ketchup or relish.

  12. Yum! Those look so great. I actually think I have all those ingredients on hand too, so those might be on the menu for dinner very soon. :)

  13. CRAP! i think i have every kind of bean in my pantry right now except black ones :( maybe i’ll try this recipe with pintos! :D
    xo.

  14. Haha I must agree with the title!! Love bean or veg burgers!

  15. I love your recipes! I’m a somewhat new vegetarian and am constantly on the look out for new recipes to try. :)

These burgers look like the hit the spot!

  16. I made a bean burger a few weeks ago, and I loved it! I definitely prefer bean burgers to veggie burgers. Most of the time, I don’t even think about missing meat, but sometimes a juicy cheeseburger sounds realllll good.

  17. I love bean burgers! I also can’t remember what a real hamburger tastes like but I’m positive bean/veggie burgers are way better anyways.

  18. In the end it’s alllll about the taste anyway! :P I eat healthy most of the time but a VERY occasional In n out doesn’t hurt one bit for me hehe. (That’s like once every 3-4 months?)

  19. veggie on veggie for sure! OKay and i add lots of ketchup, hehe.
Bean burgers are so much meatier to me. ;)

  20. No contest! Veggie burgers are bangin’ :)

  21. i love veggies on top of veggie burgers! topping burgers is half the fun of eating them :)

  22. I am a serious carnivore, but trying to cut out meat wherever I can. I don’t think I’ll ever give up a real burger, but this looks like a great alternative!

  23. Yuuuuum!

  24. Agreed!I remember hamburgers being gross and greasy…

  25. The weekend is over but I had a GOOOOOD yummy one. I ate at a lot of new places! YAY for food.

And double YAY for Hummus! I need to make this asap!
